to Franconia, mon amour...
(beautiful landscapes & ALWAYS nice and friendly people...)

About the Festival:

From "EBU Rock Festival" to "Eurospotting " and finally "EUROSONIC"
- or -
HOW THE FESTIVAL STARTED...

Early 1980ies the EBU, the 'European Broadcasting Union' had this idea of some
major radio stations of Europe coming together to showcase new national talents,
and it started September 06-10, 1982 in Aalborg (Denmark) - first then called
"Eurorock Festival" (also known as "EBU Rock Festival").

Here is more to read, a list of the countries, cities, dates & radio stations that took
part in this European music newcomer's festivals over the years, plus the main bands etc.:
http://www.ebu.ch/departments/radio/eurosonic/eurosonic_pop/highlights.php

This here is a part of the "2nd Euro-Rock Radiofestival 1984", which took

with half an hour from each venue, following the above numbers/acts...

"Bayern 3"-FM host during this festival was Fritz Egner - he started his career
early 1970ies working as audio engineer at AFN Munich. Since 1974 he was hosting
regularely AFN radioprogramms and -shows and improved his skills in the English
language. In 1979 he changed his job, joining "Bayern 3" as radio host, and was
later working both as radio AND TV-presenter - he's well known as specialist for
60/70ies, mainly Soul & Black Music.

So let's start with DAY 1 - ACT 1:
=============================

About the Band:

Twelve Drummers Drumming was very popular mainly in Germany,in spite of the fact that
they released English speaking albums with an international sound. When they appeared
in 1983, they were mentioned together by public and journalists with such great bands
as Simple Minds, Big Country, Ultravox's Midge Ure and U2.

German band Twelve Drummers Drumming started in the autumn of 1983. Seizing their name
from an English Christmas carol “The 12 Days Of Christmas”. The line up consisted of
Rudi Edgar (vocals), Kurt Schmidt (bass), Ralf Aussem (guitar), Sibi Siebert (drums)
and Colin Drummond (keyboard). Pete Brough & Charly Terstappen co-wrote most of the songs...

And all three, Kurt Schmidt, Pete Brough & Charly Terstappen
had been members of prog-/krautrock band 'Wallenstein' before:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallenstein_(band)

During the recording sesssions of the first album, Rudi Edgar fell ill due to a brain
hemorrhage which he lost his speech and part of his sensory feelings. Miracoulously he
recovered and credited that the healing came from God and said “I’d given my life to
Jesus in 1980 and now in 1988 I could speak of his healing”.

In 1988 two other ex-members of Wallenstein joined: Pete Brough and Charlie Terstappen.

After Releasing 4 albums and a couple of singles, the band re-emerged as a new outfit
in 2001 called Dead Guitars. 12 Drummers Drummer co-founder Kurt Schmidt alongside with
fellow band alumnis recruited ex-Convent’s vocalist Carlo van Putten to record a debut
album which is still waiting to be realease.

About the place of event:

The venue was the famous good old "KOMM", to be exact the "KOMMunikationszentrum Nürnberg",
from 1973 until 1997 a thorn in the flesh of Bavaria's unity party - and WHAT a thorn...

But that's history now, here are a few German articles of what happened back in those days:

http://www.medienladen-ev.de/filme/zeitung3.pdf
http://www.franken-wiki.de/index.php/Komm-Massenverhaftungen

Since January 01, 1998 (and after some kind of renovation) the new name is "K 4", standing
for: "Kunst, Kultur, Kino und Kommunikation" (art, culture, cinema and communication).
http://www.franken-wiki.de/index.php/Kulturzentrum_K4

Our beloved 'Concertbüro Franken' (CBF - Harasim & Ballreich) was the local organizer &
promoter for all four venues during the whole festival - their first really big "event"
(including this European FM-broadcast...) after their start in September 1981 (and in-between
organizing & promoting a few dozen smaller concerts of mainly regional or German acts).

Festsaal im KOMM (the room, the venue)
Nuremberg (the city)
West Germany (the country)

May 11, 1984 (the date)

Nuremberg (German: Nürnberg) is a city in the German state of Bavaria, in the administrative
region of Middle Franconia; it is Bavaria's second largest city after Munich. It is situated
on the Pegnitz river and the Main-Danube Canal, and is located about 105 miles north of Munich,
the population is over 500.000 (as of 31. January 2008). The town is also the Center of the
Metropolitan Region Nuremberg.
When one thinks of Nuremberg, they usually have things like Bratwurst, Gingerbread, Toys,
Christkindlesmarkt, Reich Party Rally Grounds or the Nuremberg Trials in their mind. But the
old town of Nuremberg in the shadow of the towering imperial castle is more than that. Gothic
churches, splendid patricians' houses and romantic corners and spots. An atmosphere of lively
co-existence between medieval and modern, between the past and the present prevails in Nuremberg.

A LIVE BROADCAST RECORDED, PRODUCED AND TRANSMITTED BY:

in Freimann and Unterföhring. There are also regional TV and radio studios in Nuremberg
(today: "Studio Franconia"), Würzburg ("Regional Studio Franconia/River Main") and Regensburg
("Regional Studio East Bavaria").

Sibi Siebert - drums
Colin Drummond - keyboard

lineage:

recorded by lonetaper, FM broadcast to analog tape

recording April 02, 1984:

"Bayern 3"-FM Bavarian Radio broadcast (more SBD & less AUD matrix) > Airwaves > Sony STR 3800L Stereo Receiver/Amplifier >
> Hitachi D 980 Stereo Cassette Tape Deck (with NoiseReduction 'DOLBY C' ON) > My Compact Cassette Master
SONY BHF 90, ferric oxide (Fe2O3), Normal Bias Type I, EQ 120us, 135 meter tape, 1-7/8ips (4.76 cm/s)

the transfer:

My Cassette (master) > Nakamichi Cassette Deck 1 (manual playback head azimuth aligned ! NoiseReduction 'DOLBY C' ON) >
> Analog Cable (coax) > Behringer SRC-2496 Ultramatch Pro
(Ultra-high-resolution 24-Bit/96 kHz A/D & D/A and Sample Rate Converter & Dropouts-/Jitter Remover) >
> converted to 16 bit, SP 44,1 kHz > > Oehlbach Hyper Profi Opto Set (optical fibre, TOS-Link) >
> Terratec Aureon 7.1 PCI - Dolby Digital Live Soundcard with C-Media CMI8768 Soundprocessor Chip, digital S/P-DIF in >
> Motherboard with AMD Multicore Processor, Serial ATA Interface > CD Wave (recording) >
> Harddisc Western Digital with Thermaltake HD Cooler (EVER had a HardDisc burnout ??) >
> lonetaper's secret box of miracles # > CD Wave (tracking) > Traders Little Helper (SB aligned/level 6) > FLAC > DIME

# RAW FILES - so NO additional NoiseReduction or EQ'ing was used here,
and none of those compressors, Sonic Maximizers or other psychoacoustic
processors - just some of the broadcast-statics reduced , balanced the
stereo channels (just a touch) and finally normalized.

THERE IS SOME TAPE HISS & GENTLE AIRWAVE TRANSMISSION SOUND (wheeziness)
AUDIBLE (but it's not too distracting...PLEASE CHECK THE SAMPLES) !

this upload here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archives.
if you want to know more about, check the old uploads...lotta stuff to read !

And if there's some interest, maybe there is MORE TO COME...
