notes:
-Al returns to Tucson for first time since Covid with a stripped down acoustic quartet featuring his flamenco type style this tour. I have seen Al several
times in Tucson in past 20 years or so and it seems to always be a different line up with some of the same players, but all three of this current tour
were new to me. Sergio has been with him 2 years he said and Miss Lupa (first name anyone?) just a few months! Mr. Alfonzi (once again, first name?)
was Al's counterpoint and anchor and they seemed very familiar with one and other. The 2 percussionists were both still on the learning curve IMO with
Al. It was great to watch him urge them on at points to be more daring/risky/let go - it seems they are both a bit enamored to even be on stage with
him still but you could watch the chemistry building like a young child learning - just wonderous and full of life at times! Overall, a mesmerizing
musical journey. Many of the songs are from his new cd which will be coming out later this year with these same players (maybe not Miss Lupa - she
joined the band a few months back while they were on tour in Brazil!). Other tunes nodded toward the Paco de Lucia days. The first song of the 2nd
set is a new one inspired by his daughter's nightly impromptu ballerina dances and is absolutely beautiful! "Al's story" is Al talking for 10:00+
about how he first got invited to play with Return to Forever when he was a teenager growing up in Jersey City, NJ (my city of birth too around the
same time! - Al's my homie!) by Chick Corea 3 nights before they were to play Carnegie Hall - just hilarious and informative and LSD influenced;
then how the tour in 1980 with Paco de Lucia and John McLaughlin came about and how in order to get Paco to play inspired he had to be stoned on
cannabis!; and how he discovered archival live material he and John McLaughlin forgot about. For someone like me, these 10:00+ were a highlight
of jazz fusion history lessons directly from the source! Be sure to check it out. And they end with the signature song of the Al flamenco days.
-did best I could with setlist - he stopped announcing most of the titles after the first 3 tunes.
-Rialto was pretty full but not enough for balcony to be open. The crowd on this Friday night was popping and ready to go/for some fun and they
got it. I was in center about 25 rows up. Nice folks all around me. Other friends there for post-show bliss sharing.
-FINALLY! The Tascam and the Cores and the pilot (me) are learning to wiork well together! This is our best cooperative effort yet! Absolutely
crisp sounding/excellent sound! ("A-"). Only issue is slight imbalance in channels. I'm smiling, not fretting about what could have been, after this
recording. Yay!
-support the artists - Al seems to always be touring at some point each year and is always fun to see. Another master you should see before he can't
be seen anymore. New cd coming soon and the live one with John he talks about in show is available.
