Review by Derek
Full Island band on stage, Dave starting with one of my favourites When The Gun Goes Down.
Had excellent view of Daren Paice up front of stage with him on the pedal steel,
Ray Snowden on keys on the right with the driving force of Neil and Paul at the back.
Too many highlights to mention although good to chat with Dave at the end after he had said on stage what a great song Never Miss The Water is.
Like me he rates Alan's melodic skills and adventurous chord progressions as much as me and would like to explore further set inclusions in that direction,
including You're The One, another of my favourites, and Make Me Want To Stay.
He also mentioned how impressed he is with the sheer originality of melody of Pub With No Taste from the demos set.
The Alan Hull Songbook
Celebrating Alans 80th Birthday 20th Feb 1945
Tonights perfrormance will be very special with some interesting guests
When Alan Hull, front man and songwriter of legendary band Lindisfarne died his widow Pat asked their son-in-law Dave Hull-Denholm to sort through Alan's home studio. Dave discovered dozens of demo tapes of previously unheard material and, along with Lindisfarne bassist Ian Thomson, thought the best way to bring it to the attention of Lindisfarne's faithful fans and the wider public was to record some of the songs. These recordings were released as the album 'Some Other Time' in 2016. In between their other musical commitments – both are members of the Lindisfarne line-up – they tour with the songs from the Album as well as many of the well-known classics.
A performance of familiar and lost songs written by Alan Hull,
Nearly 25 years on from the untimely passing of the great Alan Hull, his legacy of songs and poetry has stood the test of time and remains an important part of our national culture and heritage. His music inspired a generation of songwriters from Elvis Costello to Noel Gallagher to Sam Fender, and continues to influence young writers and musicians today.
His son-in-law, Dave Hull-Denholm, gained a unique insight into the music and the mind of Alan while working as his sideman for 2 years or so before his death, as well as his time as a member of Lindisfarne where he has taken over the bulk of the singing role and brings to the stage a poignant and genuine delivery of the songs.
The songs retain their essence and purity in a stripped-down form delivered with honesty and unparalleled musicality.
Dave has worked up a sizable repertoire including many of the classics and some recently discovered pre-Lindisfarne songs, which can be found on their album "Some Other Time".
This will be a very special night with tears of Joy and Sadness. Don't miss this one
