just back from our 12-day-trip to the Netherlands, supporting our
friends there (sadly they lost the soccer finals...) and SAILING
the Dutch sea...without Rod Stewart (was green & puking all the time...).
Met a bunch of fine people & one incredible cat (always sitting on the
canvas of the highest mast (never sea sick !), seen a lot of the
beautiful countryside, interesting buildings and water, water, water...
Sadly missed Sylvia in Amsterdam, and on our way home reelclasio :-(

As with many of the other English beat groups of the '60s, Alvin Lee cut his musical teeth in Hamburg,
Germany in a band called the Jaybirds. By 1966, back in England, he had changed the name of his band to
Ten Years After and was rapidly becoming a major attraction because of the virtuosity of his solo work.
Most Americans first became familiar with Alvin Lee through his appearance at Woodstock, although he
remained active throughout the decades which followed; among his releases were 1974's In Flight, 1986's
Detroit Diesel and 1996's Live in Vienna.

Remember this fine tour - a lot of outstanding experiences...
Visited the Alvin Lee Band live In Nuremberg, Germany on February 17, 1984...de facto it was
in Nürnberg-Reichelsdorf @ Rührersaal, one of the small local venues that had been used for
concerts in the early 80ies. I've written a description in one of our Wishbone Ash torrents,
about two years ago (and will definitely use it for the planned upload of the above show in
2012 or 13 - hahaha...). Met a "car full of" them fine Vienna tapers, they introduced me to
Alvin and his bandmates after the soundcheck. One "Wiener" had the very first BetaMovie with
him, the BMC-110 (http://www.betainfoguide.net/BTMpage.htm) and got the permission to film
(actually: videotape...) the whole concert - so i asked for a soundboard-patch. But as this
was the smallest venue of the whole tour, the drums had not been microphoned completely, and
both guitar and bass had been too low in the PA-mix, they denied, but allowed me/us to tape
front row audience...the band got a copy later, via the Vienna friends during this show here.

A great concert event, Alvin and band sound in great form, and Alvin also sounds like he's having
a good time, nothing is rushed or scuffled through as would be the case a few years down the road.
This one is real, it's raw and it's good, worth tracking down, you won't be disappointed.

Six weeks later the Alvin Lee Band played Vienna @ Arena, the venue was minimum three times bigger
than good old Nuremberg Rührersaal, BUT ALSO severly overcrowded. Sadly i was not able to join the
guys there, but those "Vienna taper" did an excellent job (am i allowed to say: AS USUAL ?), and i
got this fine tape here. So far i've never seen this complete concert in any list (except the three
or four i've traded analog with, back then), and i was also not able to find THIS recording in the
DIME-bot or elsewhere in the really big world wide web...and i did a lot of research...

en Autriche, le 1er avril 1984. Selon certaines sources, le show aurait eu lieu à la Rockhouse,
la même salle où a été enregistré le "Live In Vienna" officiel d'ALVIN LEE. Il s'agit d'un
enregistrement d'origine "audience" mais la qualité sonore n'est pas trop mauvaise. Bonne écoute !

Alvin Lee (born Graham Barnes, 19 December 1944, Nottingham, England) is an English rock guitarist
and singer. He began playing guitar at the age of 13, and with Leo Lyons formed the core of the band
Ten Years After in 1960. Influenced by his parents' collection of jazz and blues records, it was the
advent of rock and roll that sparked his interest, and guitarists such as Chuck Berry and Scotty
Moore provided his inspiration.
The Jaybirds, as Lee's early band was called from 1962, were popular locally, and had success at the
Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany (since that time lead guitarist Lee also took lead vocals), following
The Beatles there the same year. But it was not until the band moved to London in 1966 and changed
its name, first to Jaybird, dropping 'The' and 's' to make it sound more contemporary; then to Blues
Yard (for one gig at the Marquee Club); and finally to Ten Years After (TYA), that international
success beckoned. The band secured a residency at the Marquee Club, and an invitation to the Windsor
Jazz & Blues Festival in 1967, led to their first recording contract. The self titled debut album
received airplay on San Francisco, California's underground radio stations and was embraced by
listeners, including concert promoter Bill Graham, who invited the band to tour the United States
for the first time in 1968. TYA would ultimately tour the U.S. twenty-eight times in seven years,
more than any other UK band.
Appearing at the Woodstock Festival, Lee's performance was captured on film in the documentary of the
festival and his playing helped catapult him into stardom.[1] Soon the band was playing arenas and
stadia around the globe. Although Lee later lamented that he missed the intimacy of smaller venues,
the impact the film made brought his music to a worldwide audience.
TYA had success, releasing ten albums together, but by 1973, Lee was feeling limited by the band's
style. With American gospel singer Mylon LeFevre and George Harrison, Steve Winwood, Ronnie Wood and
Mick Fleetwood, he recorded and released On the Road to Freedom, an acclaimed album that was at the
forefront of country rock. A year later, in response to a dare, Lee formed Alvin Lee & Company to play
a show at the Rainbow in London and released it as a double live album, In Flight. Various members of
the band continued on with Lee for his next two albums, Pump Iron and Let it Rock. In late 1975, he
played guitar for a couple of tracks on Bo Diddley's The 20th Anniversary of Rock 'n' Roll all-star
album. He finished out the 1970s with Ten Years Later who also released two albums, Rocket Fuel (1978)
and Ride On (1979) and toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States.
The 1980s brought another change in Lee's direction, with two albums that were collaborations with
Rare Bird's Steve Gould, and a tour with the former John Mayall and Rolling Stones' guitarist
Mick Taylor joining his band.
Lee's overall musical output includes more than twenty albums, including 1985's Detroit Diesel, and
the back to back 1990s collections of Zoom and 1994 (U.S. title I Hear You Rockin' ). Guest artists
on both albums included George Harrison.
Alvin Lee in Tennessee, recorded with Scotty Moore and D. J. Fontana, was released in 2004.
Lee's most recent album, Saguitar, was released in September 2007.

Infos Fuzzy Samuel
Born in Caribbean, on the island of Antigua, Calvin grew up in London, England. He taught himself
to play piano, ukelele and acoustic guitar, switching to bass, then began traveling in England and
Europe with various soul and R&B bands. He started writing and recording with Eddy Grant, then of
the English group, The Equals, of Electric Avenue fame, while also playing with guitarist Junior
Marvin of Bob Marley & The Wailers, where he got the nickname 'Fuzz' by playing his bass through a
fuzz box. He formed the first all-black power trio in England, The Sundae Times, scoring a top ten
hit in Israel with a song called “Abba Abba”, written and produced by Eddy Grant for the album,
Us Colored Kids. The band included singer/guitarist, Dell Richardson and drummer Conrad Isadore.
This led to the making of Stephen Stills' first and second solo albums which included superstars
Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Mama Cass, Rita Coolidge, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston and The Memphis
Horns. During this time he worked and lived with P.P. Arnold performing under the name Axis. While
working with Stills a big break came getting him a position with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young,
touring the United States, recording their legendary live album, Four Way Street and the single,
Ohio. Working sessions between London and Los Angeles, he became part of Manassas, with Stephen
Stills, Chris Hillman, Dallas Taylor, Joe Lala, Paul Harris and Al Perkins, cutting two albums and
touring for three years while finding time to do concerts with America and appear with Neil Young
in the movie Rust Never Sleeps. Wrote and recorded songs with Marianne Faithful along with Steve
Winwood in the early ‘80s. Later he joined the Alvin Lee Band along with Mick Taylor touring for
over six years. For Taj Mahal, he worked on the Broadway musical, Mule Bone written by Langston
Hughes and Zora Lee Hurston, with music composed by Taj starring blues man Kenny Neal.
In the early ‘90s he teamed up with Bobby keys, Mick Taylor, Nicky Hopkins and Ivan Neville as
Tumbling Dice. Now he is performing solo on the Bouzouki a World Beat blend of Blues, Reggae,
Calypso, Classic Rock and African folk songs.
