boombox's notes january 2023:
There was a disappointingly small crowd to witness this show, which I hope does not put off the organisers from bringing more blues acts there. Opening the night was James Oliver, an almost local boy, hailing from Blackwood. I'm not sure about his singing voice, but he can certainly play - he seemed to be trying to pack in as many notes as possible into a 36 minute high energy blues set made up of mainly covers alongside a couple of humorous originals. As for the main event, this was my first time seeing AYH in over ten years - he's not the most prolific in terms of tours and albums - but it was well worth the wait. I'd categorise him principally as a blues guy, but his music incorporates roots rock and even reggae, with a bit of 60s country and some classic rock thrown in for good measure. He was more than ably supported by W.I.N.D. members, Silvano "Silver" Bassi on drums and on bass and backing vocals, Fabio Drusin, who has sat in with Govt. Mule amongst others. Alvin was suffering from the "corruption" as he called it, but a British winter cold did not spoil things at all.
My main CA-14 source recording came out pretty well, but I was a little too far away from the stack. I planned on videoing some songs too and know that the sample rate on the R07 doesn't quite gel with my camera. I've come up with the ploy now to matrix it with my HR09 source which does tie up and the results of the past two shows I've done have been very good indeed. I did add a tiny bit of mid/high end and enthusiastic applause had to be tamed at times, but there are no real faults to speak of.
