Taper Notes:
For BARN23 I went wading out into the Bayou to come back with a classic recording of the first time I ever saw Anders Osborne perform live. At the time I'd heard "Favorite Son" (from his 1995 major label debut "Which Way To Here") on WFUV, the Fordham Univesity radio station that I listened to daily, and whose format "City Folk" Anders fit right into; and I'd also heard good things from my High Sierra friends (especially Eric Vandercar who'd dubbed me a copy of his High Sierra '96 set). Add to that the fact that he was playing the TINY (less than 200 people) and long-since-closed Manny's Carwash, which was only 3 blocks from my apartment (the only music venue on the Upper East Side of Manhattan!) at the time, so it didn't take much to get me out to the show. Since the place was so small, I was able to grab a nice spot up close, and you can really hear it on this recording. You'll think that Anders is playing in your living room (except for the occasional chatter).....

Onto the show -- this is a very very different Anders that we all know today. Back then he had his significant-other, Theresa Andersson in his band on fiddle and vocals, and instead of Tim Green on sax, he had a harmonica/trombone player. Kirk Joseph is the one holdover to his current band. You can hear only one or two occasional flashes of the guitar pyrotechnics that he's known for today, playing most songs in pretty straightforward manner (4-5 minute songs), but they are still great songs.....

The show was so great that I had no choice but to go back the 2nd night for more! Look for BARN24 which will be the 2nd night of this 2 night run.

I hope you enjoy!
