Andy Stokes - Lisa Mann & The Oxford Soul Allstars
Waterfront Blues Festival
Portland, OR.
July 5, 2014
Another year of WBF recordings. Recorded from KBOO FM in Portland, OR. A great lineup again this year. I was looking forward to Greg Allman's set, but he had to pull out due to sickness. Oh well, I wouldn't have been able to share him here anyway. Seems to be much more DJ talking this year, interrupting some music. I just left it in rather than trying to edit each show. Feel free to make any changes you wish for personal use.
I may need help with some of the set list's as I don't know all the bands.
Enjoy, twofthrs

When organist Louis King Louie Pain tapped Northwest soul singing legend Andy Stokes and blues bassist and vocal diva Lisa Mann to front a weekend of performances at the prestigious Jazz At the Oxford series in Bend last winter, the two had never heard each other, let alone performed together. Yet when they hit the stage, it was instant magic: the kind of musical chemistry that only comes along once in a great while. The Bend audiences were blown away and Andy and Lisa promised each other theyd look for other opportunities to work togetheropportunities like this set at Waterfront Blues Festival.
Adding to the special chemistry of those Bend performances was the allstar group that backed Andy and Lisa, including Pain (dubbed Portlands boss of the B-3 by The Oregonian), guitarist Peter Dammann (like Pain, a former member of the Paul deLay Band), drummer Edwin Coleman III (from
Soul Vaccination), and the amazing saxophonist Renato Caranto (recently touring with Esperanza Spalding and Merle Haggard).
Dont miss the chance to catch Andy Stokes, Lisa Mann, & Friends. Youll quickly find out what got the folks in Bend so excited!!
Andy Stokes
We tend to put musicians in categories. Blues, country, soul, funk, jazz, etc. But some artists talent is just too big to fit in those neat little boxes. Ray Charles was a classic example. So is Portlands own Andy Stokes. Andy is best known as a modern R & B/ Funk singer; Andys lead vocals helped make CoolR a phenomenon in the NW & beyond, and in recent years Andys own bands have packed Portland dance clubs on a nightly basis. But the fact is, Andy can sing anything. As Curtis Salgado puts it, Andy Stokes is one of the best singers anywhere. I think hes just amazing. Ive got a wonderful voice; too bad for me its in Andys throat!
Andy showed his versatility at the 05 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival, channeling the recently deceased Ray Charles during an award-winning tribute to the late great musical giant. Part of the reason Andy was able to capture Rays magic is that hed grown up listening to his fathers recordings of Ray Charles and other classic singers. For this years WBF performance, Andy will further explore his early influences, singing material by Wilson Pickett, James Brown, Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, Johnny Taylor, etc.
