ULTRA RARE TRAX 2010 Box Set
Restored from the 3CD set on Idol Mind, originally issued mid-2010.
Here it is! The set everyone has been talking about and hoping to find. Ultra Rare Trax, transferred from the original tapes used to make the first edition LPs, and the CDs on The Swingin' Pig.
I was hoping Idol Mind would have done a somewhat better job than they did, because as it turns out, their idea of "remastering" was to apply compression and/or hard limiting to all the tracks - especially on Disc 3, which was fairly appalling. I could detect no actual remastering procedures on any of these recordings. As always, on every single track, the playback speed was off by some degree, all recordings were out of phase due to azimuth misalignment, and there was generally a channel imbalance. All of these problems were fixed as much as possible; phase was corrected, clipping was repaired, and clicks, thumps and hum were removed where present. No noise reduction was used except on two tracks on Disc 3, sourced from acetates, and there it is transparent with no artifacts. This is about as close to how the tapes could have sounded as we are likely to get, thanks to technology.
The first two volumes follow the original track listings, and then include bonus tracks of some of the rest of the tracks transferred direct without processing. Disc 3 contains the rest of the material that was on the tapes, and several tracks that they saw fit to massacre with compression and limiting. That's why we're here - to undo lousy mastering. We hope you will be pleased with the results. A number of people who got an advance listen had very nice things to say about them.
The most surprising track here is probably "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" Take 5 without noise reduction. Compared to its original issue on Yellow Dog's "Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 7," the difference is like night and day!
