i'm lucky enough to have seen bert play a number of times in the last ten years before he passed away
the songs are eternal, of course
but without the man himself, weaving that magic, hearing others play them can sometimes ring a little hollow
i didn't much fancy the big festival hall bash for (what would have been) his 80th
big names doffing their hats
but this much more intimate show, courtesy of broadside hacks, seemed a lot more appealing
in the end the chat to music ratio leans a little too heavily on the former
(though wizz jones' reflections on his old friend are particularly good value)
but when the music does come, it does the absent guest of honour very proud indeed
great to see wizz and jacqui thoroughly enjoying the otherwise under-30s beside them on stage
and that BH crowd, stuffed with practical teenagers, being so vocally enthusiastic for this old music
a particularly fine moment when compere, jon wilks, tries to 'explain' just exactly who ewan maccoll is
and a hearty yell comes back at him "WE KNOW!!"
anyway - like i say, it's the music you'll come for if you grab this
and hopefully you'll get introduced to some excellent new talent in the process
i think bert would approve
enjoy
