Every once in a while you stumble upon a "new" band that completely blows you away--it happens to all of us, right?  Well, Jersey City-based Better Off Dead did exactly that when I saw them at Asbury Blues.

They have clever, well-written songs that are loaded with catchy hooks and often-humorous lyrical content, and their live show--between the banter and the other little surprises--was highly entertaining.  I wouldn't say they're a "blues" band in the strictest sense--they play some bluesy stuff, but also some twangy R&B (akin to the Fabulous Thunderbirds and The Blasters), old school rock 'n' roll (I'm thinking Bill Haley and the Comets) and even some country-flavored material.

Although Better Off Dead's been around since the mid-1990s, I'm somewhat ashamed to admit that I just recently discovered them (many thanks to Barbecue Bob and the Spareribs for covering a Better Off Dead tune back in April 2011--that's what led me to this terrific band).

Please support the artists by seeing them perform live and by buying their CDs.  I bought all three of the band's full-lenghth CDs after the show and each one is a keeper.
