The photo enclosed shows Betty LaVette in the theater lobby with bassist Patrick Prouty after the concert.

A cold night for a hot show -- There was a small audience this evening, but they made up in enthusiasm for what they lacked in numbers, and the musicians visibly appreciated the reception. I ran into one carload of folks in the lobby who had driven all the way from Philadelphia to see Betty.

LaVette does pretty much the same set from night to night, which is why it's amusing to hear her announce a departure from the planned program to meet a request, followed by a performance of "Souvenirs" in exactly the same place in the show she sang it in the last LaVette show seeded at DaD. But this concert includes the title song from her new release, "I've Got My Own Hell to Raise," where the previous show featured "Sleep to Dream."

Darryl Pierce's bass drum pedal broke during "Close As I'll Get to Heaven," but that was no problem for these pros. A brave crewmember inserted himself between Pierce's flying sticks and the floor and did the repair while the band played on. You can hear the bass drum return to duty near the end of the number.
