Show Notes:
Billy
Fucking
Idol
in
Alaska!!!
Aaaand...outdoors at that.
This show was actually a couple years in the making, as he was booked for last year, but the plug was pulled on our Fair last year before the show was announced. But ala ol' Patricia
Benetar a few years back, Mr. Idol honored his commitment. Back then, ol' Spider (Pat's hubby) had a problem with his eye, causing that cancellation then reschedule the following year. pretty sure we all know why there was no Fair last year, so we'll just gloss over that.
Pretty crappy drive down the afternoon prior, 100 miles of rain, including the last 60, of course, by then it was dark #WinterIsComing
And woke up to, more rain. much more rain. Was THIS gonna be ths show that "fries the Sonics"?
Then, strangely, about noon, it started to lighten up...just over Palmer. Shitty weather EVERY direction, clouds, low overcast, clouds obscuring 75% of mountains, rain falling to the
north (where two valleys kinda form a funnel)...but over Palmer a bit of blue sky, and it turned into quite a perfect night...low 60's, of course with the 'imminent threat' of rain,
but that never did materialize...(but, of course, there was Clutch approaching the next night...an epic evening also in it's own right).
But back to Mr. William Michael Albert Broad...and the show itself.
Hands down, the most people I've ever seen for a show at the Borealis Pavilion. Props to the Alaska State Fair for outdoing themselves this year, with the one-two punch of Billy and
Clutch to end the Fair...old capacity was 4500, I heard nearly 5500 tickets were sold for this, it was completely sold out.
His band was tight, his setlist lean (a mere 12 tunes), and yes, he ditched his shirt a couple songs in (you'll hear a few shrieks), and all was well in 80's land.
Digging (balls)deep (hahaha) catalog compared to seeing him a few years back in Atlanta, he sprinkled in a Generation X and a Johnny & The Hearbreakers track into the set, the only
minor complaint here was he kinda mumbled between songs during the show, in an "inaudible, wtf is he saying?" sense, but you can make it all out loud and clear here...I mean seriously,
the tones and tickles from Mr. Stevens guitar...there were no walls or roof to cause any reverb. And the crowd, for the most part, I found a sweet spot in that regard too (though there
are a couple funny crowd comments, if listening with headphones, iirc)...extra bonus, as I was on the drinking side for the girlfriend...at a show at the Fair that was actually sold
out.
Really pleased with how this one came out, as well as the Foo Fighters last month (already upped).
And yes, some photos culled from Facebook and ones I took are included.
Like me or hate me, smack me or fuck me, the real thanks here goes to Mr. Orr for his production end on this, and for ol' cpscps for dragging it over to DIME.
AAAAAND my buddy Glenn and his wife for putting me +1 up for a few nights.
Aaaaaaaaaand the Alaska State Fair (again) for the job they've done on bringing an interesting variety up nearly every year, their budgets were cut back quite a bit for 2021 (as there
was *no* cash flow to speak of last year), and this year they still had Portugal. The Man (x2), Martina McBride, Dashboard Confessional, The Guess Who (hahaha), Billy Idol, Clutch,
Lil Tjay (if I remember that right), another country artist, a comedian, and at least one or two other 'name' artists I'm forgetting (14 nights of Fair, they had 13 shows).
---Fuck Hagar (and the missus) already misses the crab cakes ($20 for a bucket of 15)...and for him, it was really all about the next night...
