Lineage: Soundboard Master > 1st Generation > CD-R > Flac

Here we have an excellent quality Shaver soundboard recorded 28 days before Eddy died from a heroine overdose on New Year's Eve 2000.

For anyone that was not familiar with Shaver it was the partnering of legendary outlaw songwriter Billy Joe Shaver and his very talented and troubled guitar playing son Eddy. Billy Joe first rose to fame as one of the originaters of what would come to be known as Outlaw Country after Waylon Jennings recorded what is largely considered to be the first true Outlaw Country album made up almost entirely Billy Joe's songs. Billy Joe slowly made more of a name for himself sporadically recorded his own albums from 1973 through the 1980's. Eddy not only played on a number of his father's solo releases but also releases by Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, Waylon Jennings and in Dwight Yoakam's touring band in the 1980's.

After being out of the spotlight for a number of years they both returned under the moniker Shaver in 1993 and proceeded to record 3 brilliant CD's that had even the most jaded critics tossing around the word masterpiece. The alliance would push them between the cracks of country and rock to much critical acclaim but little commercial success.

In August 1999 tragedy struck when within a span of 30 days both Billy Joe's mother and wife (who he was married to 3 different times) died of cancer.

Tragedy struck again a little over a year later when Shaver was booked to play a gig on the outskirts of Austin. When Eddyt didn't show up, Willie Nelson filled in for him. Such was the respect that Shaver garnered. Eddy was pronounced dead in the early morning hours of a heroin overdose.

If there are any recorded Shaver shows between 12/3 and 12/31 they have yet to be turned loose so until that happens here is the last recorded show featuring Eddy on guitar.

Eddy was a very talented guitarist that knew exactly when to lay back and when to step out, a lot of wonderful music was lost to the ages when Eddy passed away.

Please enjoy one of the very best and most unique pairings in Americana music (this is the same bar where the 1995 Live release "Unshaven" was recorded). - mjk5510
