"If it's a DOODEE, you know it's the SHITŪ"
- Stripeydave 2008

Here's a prize for all you fine folks - The Black Crowes captured live in a tiny club breaking in the new guys after finishing the studio work for "By Your Side". Hot showperformance wise and hot temperature wise as well. This was my first live exposure to the lineup that featured Audley Freed on guitar and Sven Pipien on bass. I wasn't quite sure what to expect live from the Crowes post Marc Ford - I dug him them and still dig him now - but I was familiar with Audley's work with Cry Of Love and liked his style. I thought he fit in really well and was a nice compliment to Rich. Being from just down the road in Raleigh he got a warm welcome. This period of the band was a little less jammy than the previous years. "By Your Side" was definitely more of a compact, straight ahead record and this show is mostly the same even though they only pulled out the title track as far as new material went. Still, you get a 10 minute "My Morning Song". I haven't played this one in a while and listening back to post it I'm reminded of how good this show is and how cool it was to see the Crowes in this tiny venue. Ziggy's was a series of decks at varying levels, all covered by a circus-style tent. For this reason Chris made the comment that they felt like they were playing a show in their parents backyard on their deck while they were out of town. As a matter of fact, this show is full of great "Chris-isms". He's got entertaining comments throughout the show. Here's the one he left us with before exiting the stage - "Thank you for comin'. Remember, the fate of rock and roll is in your hands. Peace, good evenin'." If you're wonderin' what he was talking about, just Google the Top 100 songs of 1998. I think my thoughts are best summed up in a monologue by Marlon Brando portraying Colonel Walter E. Kurtz in the Francis Ford Coppola film "Apolcalyse Now" after he has just been mortally attacked by Capt. Benjamin Willard portrayed by Martin Sheen - "The horror....the horror." Enjoy!
