Scott's Notes:
Flower children beware! Hippies run for cover! The Black Crowes are again a true Rock-N- Roll band! Back to the early 90's when I fell in love with them.

The boys descended upon Portland, Maine tonight, and if this keeps up, by the time I'm finished seeing the first six New England shows, I'll need some medication to put on my ass from it
being kicked so damn hard! The State Theatre is a 1500 seater, similar to the Orpheum in Boston, the Beacon in New York, or the Greek in Berkeley. The oriental rugs were out, the incense was
lit, and they were totally in their element. Chris hit the stage with a black sports jacket on, and the black top hat with a feather sticking out - he was riled up from the get-go! The
playing was better than last night; tight, hard, fast and over-powering.

The stand out tonight was unquestionably Audley Freed. Many of us miss Marc Ford dearly; I practically was walking around in a coma over his departure. But guess what kiddies, life has to go
on, and I suggest giving Audley a chance - he's gonna kick your ass! What really did it for me were his solos in Black Moon Creeping and Wiser Time - flawless!! And his slide playing on
Stare It Cold was a jaw dropper! And he doesn't stand still! He's got the moves, the ability - and he LOOKS like he belongs! Wearing a very cool purple velvet top, the man rocked the entire
show - he's one bad ass!!

The two black female back-up singers are an absolute trip - not only do they sing fantastically, but they dance with Chris, and are very enjoyable to watch. It's scary to think this band is
just gonna get better! Sven's bass playing was fine - he is finding his niche quickly. Steve, Eddie and Rich were rocking as usual, and the entire band looks like they are having more fun
than they have had in years! Chris is speaking much more, and it's not about "peace" and "respect thy neighbor", it's about having a good old rock-n-roll time!

So all be warned- you will see a few Amorica and Three Snakes songs, but the days of the drastically different setlists are gone (which is a bit of a bummer). But the upside is all that
"communal" bullshit is gone - finally!! It should have always been left to the Deadheads anyway... This is straight-ahead, uncompromising, back to the roots Black Crowes band - they should
have never left that style.

I've been fortunate to have seen about 40 Crowes shows from 1990 on, and in my opinion, the energy I saw tonight can only be rivaled by the early 1992 shows! Hippies stay home, or bring your
ear plugs! This one was a keeper. - [SW]
