I was on the fence about going. It is a long trek down and was deciding between this
show or Todd Rundgren at the Fillmore. At 11 AM after my last work call I decided to
go for it. I had made copies of the last year's show to bater for help in getting the
spot. When I got down the line was long but there were no people. Just chairs or coolers.
It seems locals put down a chair at 6AM and come back at 3:45. There were two guys half
way up so I went to talk to them. Both had been there last year so I offered a copy of
the show to upgrade my line spot (whatever it takes to get the spot). At first the guy
I was talking to was skeptical whether it was any good. I took out my Tascam and the
Robert Plant master was on the memory card. He listened and wanted a copy. I told him I
only had the Blue Oyster Cult on me. He told me to grab my chair. Nice guy, but his
friend was a bit crazy. Got 2 hours of him talking about guns, fights, anti government
anarchy and a fold up electrical car that you could carry in a suitcase. At 3:45 the
people who put down chairs started showing up. I talked with a group way up front and
gave them a blanket and CDs. Once they let people in I got the exact spot as last year,
ten feet further back than the perfect spot. The people up front were in front of the
right stack very close. Could have worked but no need. The first few tracks are the
soundcheck. I had my gear ready to go but off and they started to play a song for sound
check. It cost most of the first song and the second on. I was in touch with another
taper throughout the day from Santa Cruz. He said he would come with his young son. They
arrived as the music started and sat next to me. Lots of beach balls as usual but not a
single direct hit. Between the early and late show a bunch of people bailed so I was able
to move up 10 feet. Souds a little better in my opinion. Drive home was long and painful.
Lots of road construction late at night and one nasty accident. That's why I only go to
one of these a year.
