Review from The Sun Chronicle
BY STEPHEN PETERSON SUN CHRONICLE STAFF
Bob Seger may take his time between albums, but with an extensive catalog of hits spreading over several decades, he has that freedom.
As part of the "Rock And Roll Never Forgets" tour of America and Canada, Seger and his Silver Bullet Band performed Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena, performing many of those popular tunes that have been radio staples.
Seger, who turns 68 today, told the crowd he expects to come out with a new studio album in August or September, and played a song from that. It will be his first new studio album since 2006, which ended a drought of 11 years.
In his sixth decade in the music business, the singer-songwriter from Detroit did come out with a greatest hits double CD, "Ultimate Hits: Rock 'n' Roll," about two years ago, however, which launched the recent tours.
Longtime band members - sax player Alto Reed, bassist Chris Campell, and keyboardist Craig Frost, who played with Grand Funk - remain with The Silver Bullet Band that was formed in 1973.
Segar and his band led off with "Long Twin Silver Line" and his cover of the soul number "Trying To Live My Life Without You."
The kicking "Fire Down Below" from "Night Moves" turned into a sing-along, with the sax player standing out.
The aging rocker's voice remains in fine shape, and he took a seat with his guitar for the classic "Main Street" from 1976's "Night Moves" that is among the top rock albums of all-time and finally captured the energy of his live shows.
"Old Time Rock 'n' Roll" from 1979's sensational "Stranger in Town" album was a clap-along.
Seger took a seat again with his guitar for a new ballad, "All Roads."
The rocking "Her Strut" from 1980's "Against the Wind," his first No. 1,
Before singing "Like a Rock," Seger told the crowd the last time he regularly sang it on tour was in 1986 when it came out.
A highlight of the night was "Travelin' Man," a superb song heard live that showcased the instrumentalists and segued into "Beautiful Loser." The former song dates back to 1968 and is on 1976's "Live Bullet" that spent three years on the charts.
Seger made reference to motorcycles and summer with the sweet "Roll Me Away." And the musician mentioned he also loves rhythm and blues before "Come to Papa."
After a Woody Guthrie song, "California Stars," Seger sat behind keyboards for 1978's "We've Got Tonite" that he said he originally wrote in 1975 but revised later, and "Turn the Page" written in 1970.
"Sunspot Baby" and uptempo "Katmandu" capped the main show, with the No. 5 charting song "Against the Wind" and "Hollywood Nights" in the first encore. The second featured "Night Moves" and "Rock 'n' Roll Never Forgets."
The band also featured two guitarists, three veteran female backup singers, a four-piece horn section, drummer and second keyboardist.
Seger, a Rock And Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, has sold over 52 million albums in the U.S., including 11 platinum and seven multi-platinum.
Seger started off in music in 1961, having been influenced by Wilson Pickett, Chuck Berry, John Fogerty, Hank Williams and Dylan. He himself influenced Springsteen, John Mellencamp, and Garth Brooks.
The Badlees, a roots rock band from Pennsylvania formed in 1990 and hitting national success in the middle of that decade, opened.
