BRANFORD MARSALIS

Wichita Jazz Festival

The Cotillion
Wichita, KS, USA

1990-04-28

This nice audience recording was generously offered for upload by
fellow Dimer rioblanco who taped it those many years ago. I've really
come to appreciate Branford and this band through the recent uploads
here and elsewhere. They're clearly on a roll on this one. The taper
wanted to share it since it was such an exemplary show and would add
to what has been posted. I agree.

The specs are unknown due to the passage of time but we've pieced
together what we can. This is the only way that this recording remains.
Some notes follow since some editing and small adjustments were involved
(so this is a very light remaster).

RECORDING LINEAGE:

Recording : unknown mic to Sony D-5 for master cassette >
master cassette transferred by a friend on unknown equipment to CDR >
CDR copy from taper to me (so this is two CDR's from the lost cassette)
Extraction : EAC (logs included) to WAV
Edit/Track/Adjust : Cool Edit Pro 2.1
Sector Align/Flac/Torrent : TLH

EDIT/TRACK/ADJUST and EXTRACTION:

The initial CD seems to have been tracked on the fly and had more tracks
than it should have. I eliminated a number of splits in the middle of
songs/medleys and moved them where I'd want them.

I added a fade for the announcer's intro and reduced the volume of that
small segment 3dB (it was very loud and made for a harsh start).

I retracked from track two of the original on.

There was what seemed to be a slight gap between passages toward the end
of the initial medley (possible tape flip?). I adjusted the trackmark
there ever so slightly but left it there since it seemed there was a break
and there was no obvious way (or need) to try to improve it.

I hard limited the right channel on my last track to boost it 1.25dB since
the overall level on that channel was lower in this section (though the
peaks were not, probably due to the crowd being louder on that side).

The extraction was a challenge. EAC found many errors on the first two
machines I used. The last got everything without error except the last
track of the original. I tried many attempts and the best result was only
one pass with a single "suspicious" spot which I used for this. I listened
carefully and examined the wav and can find no audible or visible error.
The logs are included.

RECORDING NOTES:

This is a nice recording. The festival setup seems to have presented sonic
challenges so the first track is a rather lengthy attempt to sort them out
by discussion and a few quick rounds of play.

The mix starts out a bit rough but gets fairly solid before long. There
was a little feedback on the bass at first and some very slight feedback
on Branford pretty much throughout (though more noticeable on headphones).
The balance may not always be ideal but it is a nice clear recording of what
was. A sample is provided.

I have enough in-laws in Louisiana that's the last name I heard, but that may
be wrong. There were many school bands involved in this festival and as
Branford observes many seemed to be there for the show. One got to join in.
