Branford Marsalis - Tenor, Soprano & Alto Saxophones
Joey Calderazzo - Piano
Eric Revis - Bass
Justin Faulkner - Drums

Recording Notes:
- I was approx 20 rows back from the stage, just left of the soundboard.
- Since I had to super stealth it, I used the Zoom's phantom power supply for
the mics instead of using the CA-9100 pre-amp in an attempt to lighten my
load, so to speak. As a result, I don't think the sound is as full, overall, as it
perhaps could have been with the pre-amp. Cie la vies...
- I'm still positioning the mics during Branford's band intros...all apologies for
the rustle and bustle.

Performance Notes:
- I gravitate towards Branford’s tone and charisma like a fat kid runs toward
the sound of "The Entertainer" on a hot summer afternoon...so this show was
all gravy for me. He was on-point from note one, engaging each member of the
band several times throughout each tune, pushing them to the next level while knee-bending and back-arching his way to even higher plateaus with his own
enthusiastic playing.
- Joey was nipping at Branford's heels all night long, challenging him and
chasing him through the most frenetic portions of the set...and also displaying
the deft and delicate hand necessary to tackle a tune like "Hope", a beautiful
and moving piece written by Calderazzo and featured on Branford's 2006 release, "Braggtown”.
- Eric Revis held down the solid low-end all evening, without a hint of overt flourish or bravado.
- And not to discredit Revis...or Joey...or Branford...but young Justin Faulkner
on drums was, to quote Miles, "a real muthafucker". Having seen his debut
with Branford's group last April, hitting 5 of 8 sets during a weekend run at the
Jazz Standard, I was really excited to see how much he's learned and grown
over the last year. Simply put - the wunderkind is phenomenal...full of power and force, conjuring-up walls of sonic thunder at will...and just as able to turn on a dime to show his gentle touch and finesse, swiftly scattering cerebral cymbal flurries or massaging his snare with his brushes. Mark my words...keep your eyes on this cat.
