Some of the songs are notated with the actual composer of
the song...while others are just notated for the individual
musician's approach to the particular piece that Branford
and the band paid homage to.
Performance Notes:
This was a unique and exciting set of music from Branford and his always
excellent band. Given the title of the evening's performance, the table
was set of a night of music made and/or made famous by some of the most
influential saxophone players in the history of jazz. Branford presented
each piece as his own interpretation of each musician's style and flavor
instead of note-for-note recreations of the classic standards chosen for
this show. This brought some thrilling, fresh moments to some otherwise
familiar musical roads. Every song is wonderful...but i got head-to-toe
goosebumps during their take on "My Favorite Things". Branford displays
total mastery, but it's the dynamic piano playing of Joey Calderazzo that
challanges him at every turn. Another notable passage is the drum solo
that errupts from the kit of Justin Faulkner towards the end of "Inner Urge"
...his immense ability this early in the game is still startling to me, and
this solo fully explains that point.
The task that Wynton asked of his brother is damn near impossible, in any
sense of the concept...but only giving the group 60 mins to teach this history
lesson seemed almost cruel...in Branford's words - "It's impossible to get all
these guys in, in an hour...this sucks!" Still, the group bubbles hot and
perculates often, doing plenty of justice to every piece covered and bringing
righteous honor to the masters of the past.
Recording Notes:
I ran this super-stealth, as ushers seemed to be running all over the place
this evening, looking for cell phone camera/video takers. To slim-down my
set-up, I ran the mics straight into the H4n without using the CA9100 preamp,
requiring me to run them off of the Zoom's "phantom" power supply. So, to
conserve my battery life, I only taped the BMQ set with the CA14>H4n set-up
and used my smaller H1 for the opening set by Ali Jackson and the Yes! Trio...
which I'll get around to posting later on this week.
