A very undercover night at the Vanguard. There's some minor mic shuffling during
the opening band intros and the occasional rec level fluctuation from the need to
go 'autolevel' and hope for the best on this one. But given the circumstances, it's
a very listenable recording...with both Monk covers being particular stand-outs of
note...especially the "52nd Street Theme" which is wonderfully punctuated by an
extended drum solo from Faulkner, who continues to impress as the "new guy' of the
group. Calderazzo is given plenty of opportunity to shine throughout...Revis is
rock-solid, as usual, albeit a bit burried in the mix...and of course Branford,
working from his ever evolving multi-colored pallette of sound and feel...artfully
blending soul, laughter, harmony, blues, joy and humility into one amazing bowl of
saxophone gumbo. Here it is, warts and all.
