The Brian Jonestown Massacre seems to be made up of little bits and pieces of so many of my favorite artists. At any moment you can hear The Beatles pop craft, the sugary noise of The Jesus And Mary Chain, the trippy psychedelia of early Floyd, the dirt of the Velvet Underground or the drone of My Bloody Valentine. Sometimes you can hear these all at the same time. Anton Newcomb makes it all go - although you can't always tell which direction that's going to be. Not sure exactly what made him who he is musically (I picture him as a youth at a musical boarding school taught by Professors Robyn Hitchcock and John Cale under the watchful eye of headmaster Syd Barrett - that pretty much sums it up) but, faults and volatility aside, the man's a song crafting genius.

Like Anton, the live gig was a bit unique as well. Eight guys on the stage, up to 5 at a time playing guitar. The frontman parked in the middle of the stage - Joel Gion, sporting mutton chops straight outta "Oliver Twist", who played the hell outta the tambourine and smoked the hell outta some cigarettes. He has to have the largest right arm and the most calloused left hand in rock. The real frontman - Anton Newcomb set up as far left on the stage as you can get, practically in the shadows, his mic stand facing the other seven members so he knows exactly what's going down and can control all the action. No encores on this one, just a continuous 2h:20m set. Long show for a club these days. Y'all enjoy!
