Billed as an exclusive Christmas show, by far the most intimate of Setzer's tour, the show was sold out for nearly a year before it happened. From the Belly Up's website: "Don't miss this one-time, special intimate holiday show, Brian Setzer's 18-piece rockin' big band all crammed onto the Belly Up stage!" and that stage is tiny...they barely fit. I saw Brian's Christmas show last year in New Jersey and needless to say, tonight's was special.

The Belly Up is famous as a small bar/restaurant outside of San Diego which somehow books very large acts onto their small stage and has for decades. Some of the concert posters inside this bar are amazing to see who has played there over the years.
We arrived a generous 1.5 hrs early to line up as this place fills to capacity very quickly and being stuck in back for taping is no good. As it turned out, once inside we ended up standing in the 2nd row literally about 3 feet from Mr. Setzer. With the stacks overhead and my mics all hat-mounted, I wasn't sure about the taping location but I wasn't gonna pass up my good fortune and sacrifice this spot by moving back. In the end, the vocals could have presented themselves a little better in the recording but Brian's Gretsch guitars are captured perfectly here coming straight out of his amps from about 8 feet in front of us.

With the 2 different mics sources I ran that night mixed together, I love how the result came out. Just like being there again. We flew in just for this show as kind of a Christmas present to ourselves.
