A Dutchbird production (recording, mastering and covers).
It was a very warm day and the ventilators can be heard now and then.
Moreover Brian has a soft voice.
This is the third installment of the festival recordings. I recorded:
- Boris McCutcheon
- Matt the Electrician (currently on the tracker)
- Brian Webb
- Jimmy LaFave Band (currently on the tracker)
- American Aquarium
At the last moment Brian Webb was added as a replacement for Charlie Parr (whom I would have loved to see).
Initially I only wanted to see the first 10 minutes and then head to the main hall where Jesse Winchester
would play, but I was so captured with Brian's music that I stayed for the whole show and skipped Jesse.
Besides, when I hear a banjo I'm lost.
If you like Jeff Buckley, Slaid Cleaves and Jackson Browne, you'll also like Brian Webb.
It's difficult to name Brian's style, his music is a mix of folk, country, blues, pop and soul.
His musical life is interesting: he was raised in Atlanta, but moved to Boston in 2001 in search of the
folk scene. After working in restaurants he decided to become a musician. He started in the
metro hall of the Boston Davis Square station, where he made more money than serving coffee.
At the station he also met club owners and festival directors, who often were that impressed that they booked him.
Years passed between his last studio album and the one that has just been released, Strange Way to Grieve.
When I asked Brian if he has more shows in Europe he told me this was his only one, but that he needs to do more shows,
so that he'll have a reason to write a new album.
