Neil Young and Art Garfunkel call him the Mozart of our time. Bob Dylan says his ear belongs in the Smithsonian. Brian Wilson, the creative genius behind the Beach Boys, at 75, still gets around. Wilson brings his 50th anniversary Pet Sounds worldwide tour to Foxwoods tonight, reprising many songs of the glory days. During a brief break, he took a pause to speak with the Bulletin. With classic lyrics such ?Oh what she does to me, when she makes love to me, we were curious about his inspiration and if hes thinking of his legacy. We found a very humble man who is in a league of his own.
It sounds like you had a busy summer and great reviews on the tour. Anything surprise you about the tour through Europe?
Wilson: The fans over there in Europe like the music very much.
Before it all started in the 1960s, did you have any formal musical training?
Wilson: No, I had no training. I learned from records, just from the music how to make music. Actually Im a self-taught piano player.
Who influenced you musically growing up?
Wilson: Chuck Berry, the Four Freshmen, Rosemary Clooney.
How does playing solo now differ from playing with the Beach Boys?
Wilson: I have more fun because I get to sing a lot more than with the Beach Boys.
How does the music you write reflect your personality?
Wilson: I think it makes sense that I sing ballads and rockers both. The music comes from the piano. When I play the piano I feel my personality musically and Im able to write melodies when I play chords on the piano.
Do you have any ideas or tunes in your head playing around before you sit down to write a song?
Wilson: No. Its all spontaneous.
Is it true that you used to have stage fright. How did you overcome it?
Wilson: I still have that. I get a little scared and nervous before each concert. I overcome it by just thinking positive thoughts and preparing myself to do the concert.
What has been the most satisfying accomplishment of your life musically?
Wilson: The day we cut Good Vibrations is probably the best part of my career. The night that we recorded the vocals was the highlight of my music life. We all just got together and harmonized and Mike just sang his head off on the choruses.
Have you started to think about your musical legacy - what your contributions will mean to future musicians?
Wilson: No, I havent thought about it. I just want people to like the music enough to want to write music. To be inspired to write.
Whose music do you listen to?
Wilson: Satellite radio with 50s and 60s music.
What advice do you have for young musicians who are starting out?
Wilson: My main advice is not to take drugs. Dont take drugs. Write songs naturally, dont use drugs.
