I've written the following for the Cockburnproject guys...

Bruce Cockburn is one of the great undiscovereds.
I feel I can use that term, as last night in a fairly large urban area of England he played a wonderful show to a half-full/half-empty theatre.
About 140 to 150 souls made the effort and were amply rewarded for their faith.
Gill and I had driven nearly 150 miles on my birthday to the nearest show to us on this tour, but it was well worth the journey.
Unfortunately due to redundancy Im not travelling to any other shows on this tourits the most galling aspect of unemployment for me.
Bruce looks more these days like a mischievous uncle as he ambles onstage, but from the opening chords
of Last Night Of The World you know he still has that ability to confound with his skilful playing.
Ive been watching from pretty close-up now for a good number of years, yet he still has only five fingers on each hand.
You can see from the setlist that there are not so many of the more recent songs being played and this would be my only reservation
when you have seen upwards of 40 shows over the years, you hope to hear re-interpretations of some of these lesser played gems.
It seemed to me that Bruce felt he had to play Lions, but wanted it over quickly with minimal opportunity for the normal audience participation of recent years.
But of course this is a tiny quibble, as Bruce could have played three times as long and only scratched the surface of the songs Id liked to have heard.
The show was over far too soon and highlights were many. The one new song, written since the completion of the memoirs is a keeper.
A gospel/train songwhats not to like? Lovely too was the version of Bone In My Ear and a rare outing (in my experience) of Planet Of The Clowns.
I know the promoter of the Brighton show (tonight) and he has only managed to sell 90 of 250 tickets for that show. Im not sure if I feel sad or smug.
Id like to see talent overcoming apathy, but in the meantime Im happy to be able to sit five yards from an undiscovered such as Bruce.
