This is an imagined concert. If Bruce came to me for setlist advice, this would be my humble offering. After listening to, and attending, many, many Cockburn shows since 1981, I decided put together a compilation of songs and performancesI would like to hear. Sequencing is important so the performance begins as solo acoustic, progresses on to Bruce accompanied by a couple players and finally we conclude with a few full band performances. There are a few of his hits, but mostly outstanding performances of (to my mind) his best songs. But as any "Human" will appreciate , four sides is not near enough to cover Bruce's incredible catalog.

All these songs were chosen for their distinctive, unique quality. "Creation Dream" is vintage Cockburn and a song that provided me with a concert experience beyond any I can ever hope to repeat. During the gig at the Lincoln Center in Ft Collins, CO in 1981 the power went out. Bruce and the band played through the 20 minute blackout without missing a beat-a truly spontaneous, unplugged moment where the power of expert musicianship was tested like I've never seen since. "Nanzen Ji" and "Laughter" are old Cockburn rarities. On the 2002 solo tour, Bruce performed a rendition of "Rumours of Glory" that was simply sublime. His improv work during the intro and the use of effects melds wonderfully with the simple melody of the song. As far as I know, "I can Wait" is unreleased and for anyone who's read his memoir you'll know to whom he's singing. The rest of the acoustic set contains songs like "Gavin's Woodpile," "Scanning These Crowds," and "In the Falling Dark:" rarely played but stunning songs, nonetheless.

Side Two opens with Cockburn's masterpiece. "All the Diamonds..." The acoustic portion of our imagined concert continues through lesser masterpieces like "Goin' Down the Road" and the intrumental "Sunwheel Dance." The gorgeous "Isn't That What Friends Are For" always brings tears to my eyes.

"I've been scraping little shavings off my ration of light
And I've formed it into a ball, and each time I pack a bit more onto it
I make a bowl of my hands and I scoop it from its secret cache
Under a loose board in the floor
And I blow across it and I send it to you
Against those moments when
The darkness blows under your door"

Sheer poetry.

Side Three begins with "Loner" and Hugh Marsh's otherworldly violin. Bruce has always surrounded himself with world class musicians and the second half of our concert is meant to demonstrate that. Colin Linden, Bruce's longtime collaborator and producer provides expert guitar on "A Dream Like Mine" and many other tracks on this collection. As we head into the Side Four homestretch, "Lovers" has always struck me as a song better performed with a full band. The tension and fear in the lyrics balanced by the immediate and accessible melody with its soaring guitar breaks. "Rocket Launcher" benefits from the full band treatmentt, as well. "Down Here Tonight" closes the show and takes me back to a wonderful time in my own life.

The encores start with "Dialogue," another of Bruce's masterworks. Melodically challenging and lyrically complex, it is a song that explores faith, friendship, and human nature. One of Bruce's strengths as a songwriter is that he provides no answers, just asks the questions and allows the listener to interpret as s/he wishes. "Dialogue" leads into "Festival of Friends." Though I believe this song is about heaven, I also believe heaven is where you find it-in people, places, and art. Heaven, you could say, is a gift.

I compiled these performances for my personal enjoyment, and share them for the same reason. There are many Bruce Cockburn compilations available out there; the newly released box set "Rumours of Glory" and the must-have "Waiting for a Miracle." Nothing beats the original tracks themselves.

I urge you to seek out the performances contained herein (theyre all available out there). Thank you so much to the original tapers, uploaders and all who share this great music. And, of course, thanks, Bruce.

Enjoy,

1chucho
