It was the night before the 2007 Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago, and the buzz was that Eric Clapton was going to stop by Buddy Guy's Legends. Buddy was sitting next to the bar, and the cashier explained to me that tonight was a "special event." It seemed like we were just waiting for Clapton to show up.

Bryan Lee was the advertised act and he played a full set, no guests. I headed outside to get some air. There I saw Buddy's drummer and bass player get in a cab and leave, so I figured Buddy wasn't planning on playing. About 15 minutes later, we heard that Buddy was heading to the stage with his keyboard player. I ran in, about 20 feet from the stage and started recording. Buddy played a little, then mid-song handed his guitar off to Lonnie Brooks who finished off the set, including some New Orleans favorites.

Here's a blog with photos by someone else that was there. Although she doesn't mention Lonnie Brooks:

Here's a video clip of Buddy with the band, posted by the bass player's brother:

I'm also including some stills I found on Flick'r.

Note: There's lots of crowd noise, and talking drunks, especially when Buddy is on stage, but this was a special moment to capture and no other recording has surfaced to date, nearly 4 years later. So this is probably the best we'll get.
