I originally had a seeat for jckson Browne but when this show was announced
I decided to go knowing that other tapers had Jackson Browne covered. I was
on my way to Davies Symphony Hall when I got a message from a friend that
Neil Young was playing at Slims unannounced. On the bill was Lukas Nelson
and the Promise of Real who backed Neil on the last tour. Since I was carrying
both recording rigs I started trying to find someone to meet me. As it turns
out it was a false alarm. I got to Davies Symphone hall early and was waiting
when I saw an enexpected familiar face. It was another taper visiting from the
east coast. He wasn't recording which is the taper's jinx (kind of like when a
pitcher has a no-hitter teamates don't bring it up). I Went in at 7 when the
doors opened. There is no search so I brought both rigs. I set up and went
to my seat. Lots of ushers but no real security. They give the no pictures,
recording, video announcement. During the opening band I get a text from a
friend about the "Neil" show and take out my phone. Immediatly one of the
ushers is speaking into my ear "no pictures" which is audible on the recording.
The opening band was decent but nothing like the kid Quinn Sullivan. After a
break Buddy Guy comes on. With BB King's passing he is the last of his era.
Every time I see him I hope its not the last time. Buddy Guy still has it and
can play his stuff and play like others such as BB King, John Lee Hooker and
Eric Clapton. As he has aged there is more story telling and its always a great
show. He seemed to abruptly end a lot of songs which was different. It was
nice to run two source and interested in hearing which is preferred.
