I recorded this myself as a college freshman at Purdue University, near
where this concert took place in a high school gymnasium. Fans of Maynard
Ferguson might be interested to note that MF's future lead trumpeter Patrick
Hession was a senior at this high school at the time and was in attendance
that night. The person next to me talked a fair amount, saying a few rude things
about Eric Miyashiro in the process ('He looks like a blowfish!') but doesn't
mar things TOO badly. I mentioned it to him via email a few months back, and
he doesn't even remember ever seeing Buddy Rich. Oh well, I remember it like
it was yesterday. At one point you hear my voice on the tape saying, "I can't
stand up, guys!' because during a standing ovation, I was busy hiding the recorder.
This is uncirculated except for a single CD-R copy given to a friend (who very
well may have put it into the Buddy Rich trading circles) in 2008.
The transfer was done from the master cassette in November 2008. MY hard drive
with the resultant .wav files has since died on me, and so I used EAC to extract the
.wav files from a 1st generation CD-R. There is a tape flip during the quiet
section of the drum solo in Channel One, and I took the liberty of joining the parts
together two years ago. You might not even hear it. Maybe I should have left a gap
there? I don't know personnel except that Eric Miyashiro and Greg Gisbert were in
the trumpet section, Tom Garling was in the bone section, and Steve Marcus was on tenor.
If the piano solo has a name, maybe the Buddy experts can help out with it.
