comments:
The Jazz Alive concerts ran in a 90 minute time slot in 1977, (no commercials on NPR radio)
then due to the show's popularity, it was expanded to a 2 hour slot in 1978 and this fine concert
was one of those beneficiaries. I think this recording has 2 tape flip interruptions.
The Buddy Rich set was the headliner in this part of the concert (Grande Parade Du Jazz is
a rather large event jazz festival held annually in Nice) and runs close to (under) 80 minutes.
Dizzy opens it up with "Bag's Groove and 2 others I could not identify, about half an hour from
his group (That is not included here) here. This is the whole BRBB part of the broadcast except 1
interruption to flip the reel over, unfortunately toward the end of the set.
(this was one inconvenient downside to the 2-hour Jazz Alive time slot)
I was going to post both together but since it's mostly Buddy's band, close to a full CD basically,
I decided to post the Dizzy part seperately, maybe with something else related later on.
(Dizzy's part in this is about half an hour, probably much more edited in his broadcast,
since this program featured Buddy.)

Having seen a couple of Buddy Rich posts up early March 21, 08, and being asked if I have any other
Buddy Rich recordings, yes, I have one more, right here.
I have a previous post featuring 3 bands at the Hynes Aud. earlier this same year, one is BRBB.
This is my only other live Buddy Rich recording. Even though I'm a drummer (used to be anyway, haven't
played in far too long) I don't often listen to Buddy Rich, but in hearing him once (here)
and seeing him at Hynes Aud. this same year, I could see why he is regarded as one of the best drummers
in jazz music at the time of this concert. (Probably still is) I know there are alot of dimers who like
really good drummers, and I like good drums and guitars maybe most of all (in general) musically.
If there's a guitar in here he won't be mistaken for Al DiMeola or Abercrombie but the "Big Band" is
always a good one. Buddy Rich doesn't mess around. The only titles I know in BRBB set are Birdland
(I believe maybe the only song he plays in both my Buddy posts), Swing Face, Body and Soul and Channel
One suite. The Dizzy set goes pretty well with this. Apparently the Grande Parade Du Jazz is one of
Europe's premiere jazz events. I think I have 1 other recording from this event but I don't recall what
it is, if I find it, and it's good, I'll post it.
This is my 1st post where the city location and the performance quality are the same. Both "nice".
(just pronounced differently.) the quality is pretty "nice" too just not recorded on my Teac (before I had one)
so it's not Teac fidelity. Some of my Teac FM reels have been posted and a few more likely will be.
Unfortunately I didn't have one for any of the Jazz Alive broadcasts, which screeched to a halt when
Reagan became president. (coincidence? not a chance.)
just 1 reason I voted for Jimmy Carter in 1980 U.S. pres. election and still wish alot more people had too.
Carter brought us our only (still) White House Jazz Festival in 1978, and I have that whole thing to share
on dime. Jimmy even performs a song in it with Dizzy Gillespie! (sort of).
Ronald Reagan was the one who put an end to that great tradition and he didn't waste a moment about it.
(far more important to him than dealing with AIDS outbreak was.) Wonder how many folks know that.
now you know where America's recent crash of the arts began. It started with our grade D- actor president.
Do not sell this recording.
This ain't Buddy Poor here.
Trade freely and losslessly.
Keep Buddy good and Rich.
