NAB alert:

Fr*d E*glesm*th was part of this show but did not so much
as play a chord or hum while Butch and Jimmie Dale were playing.
Believe me, I was watching that fucker like a hawk. He sat in
his seat and neither picked up his guitar nor approached his
mike. When the four came back out for the encore, Fred told a
story as the applause died down, which is deleted, but didn't
do a song and didn't sing or play on "White Freight Liner Blues."
His songs are noted in the track listing below for historical
purposes; beyond that, the bottom line is that while Fred was
present there, he isn't here. I edited this "clean room" style
-- before doing anything else, I tracked the file and deleted
Fred's tracks, then moved the shareable tracks to another
folder to continue working. The mentions in this text file are
the only indication that Fred was there that night.

The first set, which the Tascam somehow lost, was brief and, well,
awkward and not great. It felt like they were struggling to begin
with, but a little while in, Jimmie Dale and Butch did Townes Van
Zandt songs and Butch seemed to take it hard. He abruptly announced
they'd take a little break and that was that. Jimmie Dale started
this set with some banter and went into "Another Colorado."

This set's pretty strong, a good recovery for our heroes after that.
My levels were just a bit high; there's some resonance in the bass
and some clipping at the high end. And the venue AC was unfortunately
rumbly in a way you'll hear, particularly with headphones or earbuds.
That said, the house sound was also up some, so this is ironically a
more accurate capture than you might think -- unusually for this
venue, the house sound was bringing mike levels up for banter, and
sometimes the first bit of a song comes as a surprise. The crowd was
a little rowdy and noisy, this being a kickoff event for another
"Roots on the Rails" trip. This was my first experience with the
Tascam and, I think, the last -- the Edirol's much more reliable and
consistently gives me better results.
