NDR Jazz Workshop no. 75

Walking Woman: Carla Bley & Michael Mantler with the Naked Hamlet Ensemble

Studio 10, Funkhaus NDR, Hamburg
Rec. Jan 28, 1972
* The date is given in the outtro of the original Disc 1. In Michael Frohnes extensive list of NDR Jazz Workshops, the date is given as February 22, 1972. This is probably a broadcast day. It was broadcast in two parts, the tracks on the original Disc were part of the first, denoted broadcast A. A later rebroadcast B included just the tracks on Disc 1

Carla Bley (p, voc, arr)
Michael Mantler (tp)

The Naked Hamlet Ensemble:
John Tchicai (as, cl, fl, voc)
Irene Schweizer (p, voc)
Ole Thilo (p)

Pierre Favre (dr, perc)
Karin Krog (voc)

Michael Naura, NDR, as MC for the concert

Performance order:
------------------
If you want to recreate the original performance order, below I list my suggestion of what the actual performance order was. This is based on Michael Naura's MC introductions to the two sets (#09, #10), and the use of "Walking "Woman as the concert theme song:

First set (43:29)
09. intro by Michael Naura (2:12)
02. Walking Woman Theme (00:13) >
03. Ida Lupino (C. Bley) > Applause (06:34)
04. Walking Woman Theme > Water Music (J. Tchicai) > Applause (18:30)
05. Nagasvarum > Walking Woman Theme > Applause (12:22)
12. Walking Woman (3:37)

Intermission

Second set (45:34)
10. announcement by Michael Naura (0:37)
07. Rawalpindi Blues (C. Bley) (18:45)
11. Castrum Dolores (O. Thilo) (18:46)
13. Walking Woman (reprise) (7:25)

TT 89:04

There was a copy of Nagasvarum also on the original Disc 2. I have left a copy of it in the folder, after the adjustment of +50 cents.
X09. Nagasvarum (P.Warren) > Walking Woman theme (12:34)
In the broadcast order it fits between track 09 and track 10.

There are two broadcasts: The older broadcast A, presumably comprising originally the whole set. Its sound quality is murky, with some of the higher freqs missing. It was also considerably slower.

The newer broadcast B is better sounding, but the original track order of three tracks didn't make any sense. The tracks were rejoined and resplit as above.

The broadcast B is clearly more recent, and of better quality. I assumed this was pitch correct, and used the track Nagasvarum as a comparison. The opening note to Nagasvarum is about a low D. This makes sense, it seems to be arco on an open string of a double bass. That is, on presumably on the third string of the double bass, in ordinary concert tuning this is a D.

I concluded broadcast A was about 50 cents lower pitched (about half a semitone), and adjusted the tracks here accordingly.

Disc 1:
FM Broadcast B > ? > CDR > EAC > FLAC (post on DIME by Carville) > wav > edit/re-tracking > FLAC (level 8), no SBE
Additional edits 2023: Joined (Nero Wave Ed) & New split (CDWave) > Flac8
Sound quality: A-

Disc 2:
FM Broadcast A > ? > CDR > EAC > wav > FLAC (level 8), no SBE
Additional edits 2023: Adjusted (Wave Pad) +50 cents all files > WAVs > Flac8 (Flac frontend)
Sound quality B+

Tested for mpeg stages, TLH image included.

The music on track X09 is the same as on track 05. You may skip X09 if you burn to CD, or want to listen to it in the original order.

The entry of Michael Froehne for the NDR Jazz Workshop #75 is included in a separate text file. As his order does not conform with Michael Naura's presentations, I have not followed Froehne's listing.
