Tech:
* Cleaned up some level glitches in early part of track 2.
* I should probably have done a bit more bass cut on tracks 2 and 6, but that makes it hard to blend the other tracks cleanly.

Notes:
* Any help on the setlist appreciated, and corrections if I got the band / instruments wrong.
* Something went wrong with the lead guitar's gear, but it was remedied quickly.

* This was a great triple bill, Carlton Melton > Terry Gross > Mammatus. All the bands were really good this evening, and all seemed very happy to be playing.
* From their Facebook page: our first San Francisco show in over 3 years; hope to see some heads!!!

* Anthony Taibi is from White Manna and DDT, which made this already great night even better. I'm pretty sure he was on keyboard / guitar.
* Andy Duvall came in from the East Coast for this show, and also according to their facebook page, they just finished up something in the studio, so all in all a great night to see Carlton Melton.

"After bluesy psych rock outfit Zen Guerrilla met its demise in 2003, drummer Andy Duvall and guitarist Rich Millman picked up the pieces in 2008 to revisit their roots in the form of space/psych rock band Carlton Melton. Most people know Zen Guerilla for their more mainstream rock sound, but when the band formed in Deleware during the late 1980′s they explored a more psychedelic sound that Carlton Melton has since revived after a few recording/jam sessions in a geodesic dome in Northern California. Now that they are in their 40s with little time to spare outside of their families and day jobs, Carlton Melton manicure a songwriting process that emphasizes improvisation.
Friend of the band Brian McDougall lives in the geodesic dome that serves as Carlton Melton’s creative space where all of their recordings take place, giving their albums a signature sound. McDougall is also featured on the recordings as a studio drummer and guitarist along with John Steuernagel who provides several bass tracks. The touring band lineup is comprised of Duvall, Millman, and Clint Golden."

"Founded in Mendocino, USA in 2008
The formation of CARLTON MELTON was, in a sense occasional and in another inevitable.
July 17th, 2008 was the special day for them - Andy Duvall (guitar and drums), Brian McDougall (drums), Rich Millman (guitar, synthesizers), and John Steuernagel (bass) have drawn up a plan to play live, loud, improvised, experimental, instrumental, psychedelic music in the Geodesic Dome off the Mendocino County coastline in Northern California, where one of the members [Brian M. I assume] resides and lots of friends have gigged and recorded all kind of music for a long time - this project came true on the day and eventually CARLTON MELTON could give the first shout as a permanent band.
CARLTON MELTON create an original music style with much influenced by lots of music and artists, especially by the sounds constructed inside the Dome and the beautiful, coastal setting in Mendocino County."

"Chosen by Rolling Stone magazine (RS 813) as "the best place to hear live music in San Francisco," the Bottom of the Hill presents some of the finest original artists, seven nights a week. Featuring up and coming acts from around the globe as well as in our own backyard, the music spans the spectrum from alternative, rock-a-billy, punk, and hard rock, to folk and funk and pop. The Bottom comes fully-equipped. It offers a full bar, a kitchen that stays open late and a patio area where guests can escape the crowd and have a smoke."

* The club has a solid sound system, and has a good calendar, worth tracking them for the next great show. Very 'rock club', in the good sense of the word, informal, comfortable vibe, a place to go to see music and have a good night. Support these independent venues, they are the lifeblood of living underground music.

Dan Healy (Grateful Dead sound engineer), on audience recordings:
“I learn a lot from hearing those tapes... The axiom that ‘microphones don’t lie’ is a true one. If you put a microphone up in the audience and pull a tape and it doesn’t sound good, you can’t say, ‘It was the microphone,’ or ‘It was the audience.’ You’ve got to accept the fact that it didn’t sound good. When you stick a mic up in the audience and the tape sounds cool, it’s probably because the sound was cool. So it’s significant to pay attention to the tapes.”
[assuming decent quality powered mics, of course...]
