* This is a very unique and special field recording I made to capture the distant,
ambient reverb and echo of the Telluride box canyon from the
Bear Creek Trail landing overlooking the festival site, facing north towards
Mt. Sneffels. The enclosed photo scans are the only two pics I took of the site we recorded from. You can see the Jazz Fest setup in the distance, about a half mile from where we put the rig.
It was a pretty extensive effort to lug all of the gear up the trailhead to the landing (the Far Outlet weighs about 35 lbs., the DA-20mkII and the U87s were bulky and cumbersome to walk with). As clearly as you can hear the Duran line array on
the stage at the trail, it's definitely overshadowed by the immensity of the box canyon and the way it moves sound around like a giant bowl.
This is why we made this tape. I highly recommend enjoying this with headphones to get the full effect of being there. - DS
