NOTES:

This was my sixth time seeing the Chemical Brothers, and the 4th time live at Coachella (I saw them play at my very first Coachella back in 2005, then again do a "DJ set" in 2009, and again live in 2011). It's hard to believe actually, 18 years after my first Coachella, the Chemical Brothers are still playing and kicking ass live. It's astonishing really, and I'm so glad it's a reality. As soon as this year's lineup dropped and I saw their name near the top of Friday night, I nearly fell over in excitement. I had missed the Portola festival last September (which they headlined) and I was praying to the festival Gods that they would come back and visit the west coast again, and sure enough, Coachella listened and here they are. I think any smart/crazy music fan knew who the real headliners were Friday night (sorry Bad Bunny).

They played the Outdoor Theatre, which has grown in size over the last few years, and I thought fit the scale of the show perfectly. I decided to bail on seeing Gorillaz over at the main stage (heartbreaking I know) to get a good spot right in front of the soundboard for this show. My anxiety would go crazy if I didn't. I have no idea what I'm going to do during weekend two yet, as I still do want to see Gorillaz but yet want another good spot for this show. First world problems, right?

Anyway, they were scheduled the close the stage, and they roared through a complete 90 minute set (so thankful for this, as anyone who was there the last they played Coachella in 2011 on the main stage, might remember that their set time was cut extremely short due to Kings of Leon not allowing the Chems to set up their equipment and have it ready to go during their headlining performance), full of all the hits and new songs you'd expect. And the visuals? Jesus Christ, they never disappoint and just get better with each show. This was a true first class performance on all levels, from the vibes/energy, to the sound blasting through the stacks, and again to the aforementioned visuals. Everything was just A+, and I'm so glad the Chems decided to come back "home" to Indio (they played the very first Coachella back in 1999 afterall) 12 years on. Some things are worth the wait (including this recording I hope).

PS: I tried to track this the best I could. Some of their mixes sort of flow from one song to the next and then back, so it is what it is. Enjoy!
