Chuck Leavell is sometimes called "the sixth Rolling Stone," having spent more than 20 years with the band as pianist and unofficial music director. He's also a veteran of another legendary rock outfit, The Allman Brothers Band, which he joined following Duane Allman's death, and with which he played until the band's demise.

Leavell decided on his musical path in life when he was 13, during a concert by Ray Charles. When Leavell was 15, he went to Muscle Shoals, Ala., where he joined the renowned session men of Muscle Shoals Studio. He later joined Alex Taylor's Friends and Neighbors band and toured with Dr. John. In the 1970s, he formed his own group, Sea Level, which toured extensively and released five critically acclaimed albums. In 1982, he took over keyboardist Ian Stewart's pivotal role with The Rolling Stones.

In addition to recording and touring with the Stones, Leavell remains in demand as a session musician over the years, having worked with Gregg Allman, Chuck Berry, The Black Crowes, Blues Traveler, Larry Carlton, Eric Clapton (on the Grammy-winning Unplugged album), Aretha Franklin, George Harrison, Warren Haynes and Gov't Mule, John Hiatt, Indigo Girls, Train, Dave Edmunds, Dion, and scores of other artists. He's also released several solo albums, including 2001's Forever Blue.

Leavell is also a nationally recognized conservationist and tree farmer. His new book is titled Forever Green: The History and Hope of the American Forest.
