By happy coincidence, I was on vacation in the Bay Area this year when Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express played their annual New Year's Eve show at the Starry Plough, a terrific little Irish pub with Nicaragua solidarity posters on the walls and a side room just big enough to hold a small stage and a few dozen happy revelers. And the show didn't disappoint, with lots of laughs, a large helping of new songs from Chuck's upcoming album "Bobby Fuller Died For Your Sins," and a rocking two-hour-plus set that included site-specific covers of The Other Half and the Flamin’ Groovies. I've seen Chuck and his terrific band several times now, and this was among their best.
Recorded with hat-mounted mics from about 20 feet back from the stage, dead center. Buy Chuck Prophet's music, get on his always hilarious mailing list, at check out his upcoming spring 2017 tour dates at chuckprophet.com.
