Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express live are always a treat, and this one, the New York stop on his Night Surfer tour, was no exception. Several songs from the new album here, even more from his previous (Temple Beautiful), and several well-selected covers. This tour seems to be one for kicking out the guitar jams, with "Summertime Thing" and "Willie Mays" in particular leading into extra-lengthy guitar duels between Chuck and James; also notable are Stephanie's vocal turn on "Different Drum" (made famous by Linda Ronstadt, written by Mike Nesmith of Monkees and Liquid Paper fame), and Chuck climbing down into the crowd during the instrumental break of "Willie Mays" and lecturing the crowd (off-mic, but I was close enough that you can just make him out) about "staying home on a night like this and watching Law and Order." He also continued his new routine of borrowing a phone from an audience member and filming for a minute onstage before handing it back.

Recorded with two sets of hat-mounted mics (CA-14s and CSBs) from about ten feet back of stage center, then mixed in SoundStudio. Thanks to Chuck Prophet for his granting blanket permission for recording of his shows — express your appreciation by buying all his records at http://chuckprophet.com. (They're all great, you won't be sorry.)
