What a difference a year makes. Originally The Civil Wars were booked for a far smaller venue in Leeds "The Wardrobe" which has maybe a capacity of 200 or so. But then came 2 Grammy nominations and wins for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and Best Folk Album. Result was a quick venue change to the 1,000 plus Leeds Met Students Union Building where it was pack them in like sardines and was still a sell out. At this time they were riding the crest of the wave and their chemistry was a joy to listen to and watch. This show in March was a really good show. 8 months later they, to all intents and purpose split up as a touring duo.
They have recently announced that a second CD is imminent.
I attended and recorded the gig in November 2012 which was supposedly the night of their split up and the following day the majority of their remaing gigs were cancelled. It showed in the performance given that night!
This performance was great, they looked at each other, their harmonies intertwined to ridiculous degrees. They exchanged banter and seemed pleased to be performing.
Next week I'll hopefully upload the November 2012 gig from The Sage, Gateshead which although good is very different and the performance was not in the same league as this show. It did, however, have the wonderful Lumineers as support.
