Coby Brown Group
Wetlands
New York, NY
11/12/1999

Original Master Recording: Scheops CMC64 -> Sonosax -> Teac DAP-20 (@16/48)

DAT playback: Sony R-500 -> Sound Devices 722 digital input (@24/48)

Mastered: Soundforge Pro 10.0c - *All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits*. Sample rate conversion 48khz to 44.1khz using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter. 24 bit file then processed with SOX 14.3.2 (as recommended, keeping the file at 24 bits during the processing) to remove pre-emphasis which was applied by the Teac A>D converter. Then back to Soundforge for volume normalization and dithering to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, with high dither settings. Tracked in CDWav.

Donna The Buffalo, The Recipe, and The Big Wu played played after Coby Brown Group. Miracle Orchestra played all night between the sets of the upstairs bands in the lounge downstairs. I believe that this was a Phoenix Records showcase night.

Taper notes:
For completeness sake, I'm going to continue to put out the other music that I've uncovered that was played on the night that BARN81 was recorded. Lots of bands on the bill, so here comes the next one -- Coby Brown Group. I still hardly remember this night, and certainly didn't have any recollection of Coby Brown Band (who, apparently got press as being the "next Dave Matthews Band"). That said, this is really good music! The reviews that came out of his album that he's promoting here call him a cross between "Sting, Stevie Wonder, Jeff Buckley, and Blues Traveler." I wouldn't go that far, but I would say I can hear bits of all of the above but not Blues Traveler so much. Billed as sort of a soulful jamband, I hear the soulful sounds and nice grooves, but I don't hear the Jamband thing so much. They remind me of acts like Ryan Montbleau or Marc Broussard. Let's face it -- this guy has a great voice and writes some pretty good songs.... but he's nothing like Dave Matthews Band or Blues Traveler though.

Some more Google searching has apprently turned up news that Coby broke up the Coby Brown Group after 1 more EP, did not get the record deal he was searching for, got married, recorded another album with his new band "Coby Brown and 11:11", got and survived a rare bone cancer, and is still trying to make it in the record business. See this pretty extensive article here: http://aleim.com/issue1/2009/08/09/coby-brown-musician/

His website is here: http://www.cobybrown.com/ and apparently you can even get a free copy of his latest album if you friend his band on Facebook! He seems to play mostly in Los Angeles these days.

Look for more acts from this night as future BARN entries.

Enjoy!
