Emmylou's Gardens party to halt mine

COUNTRY music diva Emmylou Harris is heading to Edinburgh this summer to top the bill at a star- studded charity concert to highlight the global problem of landmines.
Princes Street Gardens will host the event, which is also expected to feature protest singers Joan Baez and Billy Bragg, country rock idol Steve Earle and Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde.

The 6000-capacity Concert for a Landmine Free World, which will be held during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, is expected to be a sell-out.

It is the latest in a series of special events conceived by Ms Harris after a visit to Cambodia in 1998 where she discovered the full horror of unexploded landmines.

At the time, she declared: "It’s not good enough to say we won’t put any more landmines in the ground, we’ve got to get them out. It comes down to basic courtesy. Something you learn at kindergarten, you clean up after your mess when you are through. Until we do, these countries are going to be hostages. They are going to continue to live the war many, many years after peace has been declared."

Other stars who have supported Harris’s concerts in the past include Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crowe, Bonnie Raitt and Nancy Griffith.

Costello and Griffith starred with Harris in a previous concert for the charity in Glasgow last January.

In the past star names such as Tony Bennett, BB King and Bryan Ferry have all played Princes Street Gardens, as well as Scottish acts such as Runrig and Texas.

The charity concert will be held just days after open-air shows featuring Dionne Warwick and Jools Holland are held at the same venue as part of the Edinburgh International Jazz Festival.

Princes Street Gardens is also expected to play host to another star-studded concert in November to coincide with the staging of the MTV Europe Music Awards. Mark Mackie, director of Edinburgh based Regular Music, the promoters of the event, said: "We are delighted to be bringing a Concert for a Landmine Free World to Edinburgh.

"Not only do we have a magnificent line-up, we will also be able to raise the awareness of this very important cause.

"There can be no better way of doing this than by organising this show in the very heart of Edinburgh during the largest arts festival in the world."

Depute Lord Provost Steve Cardownie, the city’s festival and events tsar, said the concert would be a tremendous boost for the Capital.

"All these stars are associated with anti-violence and anti-war movements.

"For them to all be on the one bill is great for the city as they are all accomplished songwriters and singers.

"The event will also help bring home the message that landmines disable children every day.

"Landmines should be outlawed because after wars they are abandoned and it is the civilians who suffer.

When people see the line-up, they will be rushing from all over Scotland to snap these tickets up. I’ll be amazed if this is not a sell-out."

Simon Conway, spokesman for the UK landmine charity, The Halo Trust, said: "Landmines cause immediate harm. They can kill children and remove limbs from adults.

"There is a huge problem in Afghanistan with our charity having cleared away one million mines in the last 14 years in that country alone.

"The world’s greatest producers of landmines are Russia, China and Pakistan."

Admission to the event will cost £30 a head for the Ross Theatre’s seated enclosure, and £15 for the picnic area in the Gardens themselves.

Tickets for the event were due to go on sale from 10am today from the Usher Hall box office, Ripping Records on South Bridge and Ticket Scotland on Rose Street or by calling Ticket Web on 0870 90 33 444.
