Total Time ::: 3:21

::: EXC+ studio outtake. Check sample to "get it all while you listen", YOU NEED THIS.
::: Warts (NONE audible): Repaired a few dullspots & dropouts so mighta missed one.
::: COMPARISON CLAUSE: This is the Mk2 Cipollina reel UPGRADE version. "Mk1"lesser quality"Bob Gurman reel"DIMED 2012 (no longer on tracker).
::: This Mk2 JC reel is a MAJOR quality upgrade, much closer to the master. It also has a little laugh in fade-in & channels flipped (probably correct here).
::: Melton's reply to my 2021 query was that he doesn't remember the song or know who's singing!
::: Comparison to Mad River "Jersey Sloo" with Dewey lead vocals convinced me it's him singing.
::: Greg Dewey sang with his bands Mad River, Grootna, Bodacious DF, etc.
::: Kapner did not reply to queries about this track & contact with Dewey proved unfrutiful.
::: Ouija board attempts to communicate with Cipollina in the spirit world about this cut also failed.
::: "CJ Fish"LP sessions produced by Tom Wilson. If this be from those sessions, than likely it be he.
::: *DATE/SOURCE: Cipollina's reel was ONLY labeled "John Cipollina&Country Joe&The Fish 1969 studio out". Mk1 Gurman reel version was labeled "Nov. ? 1970". That's where this"CJ Fish"LP session attribution is from, BUT Country Joe&The Fish's 5th LP"CJ Fish" was released in May'70. It was recorded Jan.'70 at the L.A. Record Plant (according to Wikipedia). Looking at Fish timelines, possibly there were also Dec.'69 sessions when the band was in L.A., so the '69 date seems a possibility, working on the assumption this is, in fact, a"CJ Fish"album out & not from another session. Given the album title, it's worth noting the JC label could have been mis-read & did indicate the album. No line-up info was given on Cipollina's reel. Line-up here is as given on Gurman's reel - except no vocalist was noted, but it seems likely it's Dewey as noted above. Cipollina's guitar work comes across loud&clear. Country Joe is NOT singing and, unless playing a 3rd guitar, probably doesn't appear at all. If anyone has further info, or guitar style identification thoughts, do weigh in.

Recording Information ::: John Cipollina's stereo studio reel (1st generation from stereo mixdown master?) -> 48kHz DAT -> **2nd generation Maxell MX-90 cassette, Dolby B on. (**As with many of John's reels, actual lineage is unknown).

Playback 2021-02-xx ::: **2nd generation Maxell MX-90 cassette on Nakamichi 680ZX cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth adjusted for individual tape, heads cleaned & demagnetized -> Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10 (48kHz/24bit wav file) -> computer -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset (NOT to normalize volume), channel/phase alignment, fades, a few manual one-at-a-time dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, pitch (speed) checked OK in frequency analysis, NO equalisation (except several notches to remove loud hum, now totally gone), NO noise reduction] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> 48kHz/24bit flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. Freed 2021-05-xx.

Line-up (according to Mk1 Gurman reel notes except Dewey vocal/composer guesses) ::: John Cipollina (†R.I.P. 1989†) - electric guitar // Barry Melton - electric guitar // Mark Kapner - keyboards // Doug Metzner - electric bass // Greg Dewey - drums, percussion, (probably) lead vocals, composer(?).

Never commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending track offline.

DimeTravel 791 ::: Thanks to the original taper & trader! Thanks to DIMER mjk5510 for the Gurman "Mk1" source for comparison. Sincere thanks to whomever uploads this for me. ::: Corrections welcome ::: I think this is a fantastic, hallucinogenic song that deserves to be heard & be considered an integral part of the West Coast "60s" music canon. Whether it was worth a full day's work to restore & write notes for is unclear, but I enjoyed the process & detective work. I was going to include it in a collection, which may still happen, but the clock is T.I.C.K.I.N.G. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees
