In the spirit of all the great music being released here by the likes of Ed, Roel, NYfanatic &

CSNYguy, I thought I'd go through the old analog archives and dig out one of my own,

previously unreleased master recordings of Crosby, Stills & Nash for my next A > D conversion

project. If I recall correctly I was seated about « way back on the floor, left of center. This was

before most of the major reconstruction that renders Jones Beach Theater in its current more

contemporary configuration. For those who don't know, Jones Beach Theatre was built in

approximately the late 1940's by New York's master builder Robert Moses. It sits on a narrow

strip of land on a private little inlet off the bay that is about 100 yards away from where the

waves of the Atlantic Ocean break against the shore of Long Island, NY. Few outdoor theaters

come close to capturing the natural beauty and serenity of Jones Beach Theatre, it is truly a

special place. I remember going there as a kid in the early 60's with my parents on many a

summer evening to see the likes of Guy Lombardo and his orchestra perform. Occasionally there

was a theatrical performance, in the genre of the old Rogers and Hammerstein shows, such as

South Pacific, that would integrate into the production use of the moat that separated the stadium

like seating from the stage area.

The theatre sat largely unused for about 10 years following the death of Guy Lombardo, until

about the early 1980's when a rock n' roll promoter (Ron Delsner???) was able to cut a deal with

its owner, the State of New York, that permitted him to bring in a few rock acts. The venue

caught on like wildfire, and after the first season or two, they managed to fashion an orchestra by

nailing some planking over the moat that existed between the fixed stadium seats and the stage.

At high tide, however, the planking became submerged and we wound up standing knee deep in

the chilly waters of the bay, or we stood up on our chairs to keep dry. A few years later,

somewhere around the early 90's if I recall correctly, more permanent construction was had,

building a much larger orchestra section and adding an extra level of about 5,000 seats above the

old grandstands.

Most likely it was raining on and off the night of this show, as I hear the occasional muted sound

caused by wearing my hood and the crinkle of a rain poncho against the mic's. This in no way

spoils this great recording, but it explains a few of the errant sounds you may hear as you listen.

Hope you all enjoy this recording as much as I do. As always your comments and star ratings are

appreciated.

Please do not distribute this recording in lossy formats such as MP3. Though it's perfectly

alright with me if you convert it to those kinds of formats for your own personal listening on your

i-pods, etc., I would prefer that if you share it with a friend, kindly do so in .wav, .shn or .flac

formats.
