Crosby Stills & Nash
The Sage
Gateshead, UK
15th October 2013

For me, this fell into the "you'd might as well go and see them because they're playing in your 'back yard' and you may not get the chance to see this band
again in such intimate and familiar surroundings again" category.
I like a fair amount of their music, but in my own mind I suppose I harboured a somewhat prejudiced view that they were all washed up and well beyond their
"sell by" date. How wrong I was.
It's no accident that these Greats are still selling out large venues all over the globe. They have the music, they can put on a show, but importantly, they have
the charisma...that special something that "connection" with the audience which takes it beyond just being "an enjoyable night's entertainment" to being....
something else.
They're not perfect though. Obviously, they're not as young as they were. Stephen Stills struggles with a lot of the higher register singing, and his guitar playing
isn't as fluid as it once was - but he doesn't back off...and he still means it. They all do. Imperfect it may be, but perhaps this serves to highlight the emotional
element inherent throughout tonight's performance.
Two sets totalling around two-and-a-half hours passed by in what seemed little more than a heartbeat; an engrossing show which I wished had went on for a lot
longer than it did.
The "hired guns" they had in tow with them need to be recognised. Tasty players, who had clearly left their egos at the stage door for the sole purpose of bettering
the musical experience. Proper musicians.
One or two flat spots, hugely outweighed by innumerable highlights. For me, Guinnevere was a "big" moment.
I hope I get the chance to see Crosby, Stills & Nash again.

Do what you will with it - except sell it :
You got it for nowt, you give it for nowt

Everyone should by now have some CSN in their collection. I was very impressed with the new material played and also look
forward to the long awaited release of the Live Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album, recorded in 1974 (due spring '14).
Don't forget to support the "new" releases, as well as the old. Clearly there's some great stuff in the pipeline!
