How many years has it been since the Jazz Crusaders have played together?
I think the last time Wayne Henderson played with them was in the 1980s.
So here you are, one of the great super groups of jazz, reunited again
for a single series of concerts at the Northern California Mecca of Jazz, Yoshis.
This gig catches the Crusaders in a one time reunion gig playing mainly oldies
from the 1960s and 1970s, so youll not hear Spriral here. Wayne Henderson acts as MC.
Both sets were recorded, but Ive uploaded only the 1st set.

Four fun facts about the Jazz Crusaders: (1) First, their first recorded song was a pop hit on
AM Radio in 1961 about the Civil Rights struggle, called Freedom Sound; (2) When the Symbionese
Liberation Army aka Donald DeFreeze kidnapped Patty Hearst in 1975, and they delivered the ransom
tape recording, a Jazz Crusaders song, Way Back Home, was prominently in the background, causing
the FBI to interview Joe Sample; (3) Third, Wilton Felder played bass for Barry White on all his hit
singles; and Finally, the Steinberg Grand Piano that Joe Sample plays was specially delivered from
New York for this gig, and cost $120,000.
