Total running time: 35 minutes and 14 seconds

Notes:
Damn fine recording. Nearly flawless except for some minor tweaking of the recording levels during the first 2 tracks.

Cyril Lani Pahinui has won numerous Hawaiian music awards and two Grammys® and has traveled the world performing ki ho’alu, Slack Key guitar. Like all great Slack Key guitarists, he has developed a distinctive style that is instantly recognizable. His soulful baritone voice is also unique and brings a deeply personal emotion to everything he sings.

Gabby Pahinui (Cyril?s father) was one of Hawaii's best-known and most in?uential slack key guitarists whose 1946 recording is considered the prime in?uence that kept slack key from dying out in the islands. Cyril?s 1988 recording of traditional and contemporary songs won Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for Best Contemporary Hawaiian Album and Best Male Vocalist from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts, and he won again in 1994 and 2000 for Instrumental Album of the Year.

What is Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Music? Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar (ki ho'alu) is truly one of the world’s great acoustic guitar traditions, considered to be one of the oldest music traditions to still be a viable (other than just historical) part of a modern culture. There are different theories about the beginnings of slack key guitar in the islands: European sailors who possibly introduced Hawaiians to the gut string guitar around the beginning of the 19th century; Mexican and Spanish cowboys hired by King Kamehameha III around 1832 to teach Hawaiians how to handle an overpopulation of cattle; Whatever its origins, ki ho’alu - as it’s called in the Hawaiian language - has evolved into a highly developed instrumental art form in both solo and group formats. When played solo, the beautiful and unique intricacies of the slack key guitar can be most fully appreciated, as the music of each master has great depth and individuality.

PLAY LOUD?

With regards to the distribution of this recording, I only ask that you try real hard not to spread it around as MP3 files; otherwise, do what thou wilt.
