I've been wanting to see DSO for a long time. We were visiting Phoenix, Ariz., the first week of October and just so happened, DSO were playing the Marquee Theater in Tempe on Oct. 4 so we decided to go.

We grabbed our tickets at will call and walked across the Salt River bridge to the bars on the outskirts of the Arizona State University campus and drank a beer before the show. We got in the theater about a half hour before the 8 p.m. start time and the place was virtually empty. I was told it was due to the Further show in Las Vegas. A local also told me shows in the Phoenix area are not well attended.

We set up in front of the board and the band started at 8 p.m. It was an original DSO set with a mix of Grateful Dead songs and a couple of Jerry Garcia tracks. They played a great first set and we were floored when they opened with "Alabama Getaway" since we're from the Muscle Shoals area of northwest Alabama. The Grateful Dead opened with "Alabama Getaway" when I saw them at the Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham, Ala., on April 28. 1980.

The second set was nearly two hours long and included some of my favorites and a 20 minute drums > space. Despite the very sparse crowd, the band did not disappoint and gave the fans a nice show that clocked in at just over three hours.

The recording is a little bassy at times and in my opinion suffered a bit from the empty room. I tried to adjust but it still came out a bit over driven at times. Obviously, I've never taped in this room, but overall it came out pretty good.

enjoy!
