Dave Douglas, just about the pre-eminent trumpeter in contemporary jazz, has been involved in a huge diversity of projects. His New Quintet is in part a Miles Davis tribute band - with a difference. From Beethoven to Picasso, transitional periods have always been fascinating, and Douglas has taken the Davis transition (around 1968) between his classic '60s quintet and the ensuing electric upheaval, and extrapolated a fresh set of possibilities.

The compositions are his own, and his slicing trumpet playing is a world away from Davis's. The link comes in the lightness, litheness, rhythmic flexibility and openness of textures generated by electric pianist Uri Caine, bassist James Genus and drummer Clarence Penn. It could eddy and swirl like a dust storm, suddenly revealing sharp outlines of melody, rhythm or structure, and just as quickly obscure them again. Over this rushed Rick Margitza's tenor saxophone and Douglas's trumpet. The latter was a ringing, joyous device, and the music was often charged with celebration.
