so
if you were to put a gun to my head
(and please don't)
and demand i name my favourite record of all time
first, i'd have some kind of unwise debate with you on the sad patriarchal nature of fanboy list-makers
then i'd make absolutely sure with you that it was loaded
and then, assuming it was, i'd be forced, against every natural impulse, to choose
i would not be happy
(for many reasons)
but 'if i could only remember my name' would very likely be it
which means, of course, that the potential for crushing disappointment is dramatically high tonight
at five to seven, mrs rad and i are clutching each other's hands in some degree of pre-game panic
at a couple of minutes past, we are very, very happy indeed
as we got to (somewhat drunkenly) say to organiser and all round marvel, kate st john, afterwards, the one phrase ricocheting around our skulls beforehand was 'do not fuck this up'
and by god, they didn't
everybody involved seems transported to extra heights by the communal power of the experience
and communal it very much is
bar mike scott, everyone is on stage the entire night
moving between lead turns and the vocal ensemble
and looking altogether delighted to be any part of this thing whatsoever
when cros himself makes a seemingly celestial appearance - his inimitable multi-tracked vocal on the album's closer cascading through the room - you have to feel that he approves
(as this is the original recording, i've had to remove it from this upload)
despite its origins in grief and consequent thought-numbing abandon, this is some of the most beautiful music ever made
and it is, for sure, the beauty that takes the central role tonight
we made the journey from london out to wales especially for it
and were repaid a thousand times over
the collective (with a couple of alterations) are doing it all again at the barbican in february
if you're in london, you would be foolish to miss it
and, as you can, with this recording, try before you buy, there's no need for me to hold a gun to your head
enjoy
ray
